Top 10 Update

Beyond the Nationals taking CC of Southern Nevada catcher Bryce Harper No. 1 overall, very few picks are finalized. But the picture at the top of the first round started to get clearer with some developments Saturday. Here's where the top 10 choices stand as of now:

1. NATIONALS: Bryce Harper, c, CC of Southern Nevada. Nothing new here.

2. PIRATES: Jameson Taillon, rhp, The Woodlands (Texas) HS. Pittsburgh will choose between Taillon and Florida high school shortstop Manny Machado, and the pendulum now is swinging toward Taillon.

3. ORIOLES. Manny Machado, ss, Brito Miami Private HS. Baltimore will take whichever one of the top three players remains on the board.

4. ROYALS. Yasmani Grandal, c, Miami. Reports have run the gamut from Grandal wanting Buster Posey money ($6.2 million) to already finalizing a deal with Kansas City. Though his adviser, Greg Genske, says neither is true, it's clear that Grandal has passed college lefthanders Chris Sale and Drew Pomeranz in Kansas City's pecking order.

5. INDIANS. Chris Sale, lhp, Florida Gulf Coast. Though Cleveland will be tempted to take a bat (Texas-Arlington outfielder Michael Choice), look for the Tribe to take one of the college lefties. They appear to prefer Sale, who is moving ahead of Pomeranz on other draft boards as well.

6. DIAMONDBACKS. Drew Pomeranz, lhp, Mississippi. Arizona will take a college pitcher from among Sale, Pomeranz, North Carolina righthander Matt Harvey and Georgia Tech righthander Deck McGuire.

7. METS. Justin O'Conner, c, Cowan HS, Muncie, Ind. New York hasn't greatly exceeded MLB's bonus recommendations since giving 2005 first-rounder Mike Pelfrey a $5.25 million major league deal. The Mets are looking at Arkansas third baseman Zack Cox (a draft-eligible sophomore) and a pair of Boras Corp. advisees, Harvey and Cal State Fullerton shortstop Christian Colon–none of whom are expected to happily sign for slot money. GM Omar Minaya scouted O'Conner's final game on Saturday, and the catcher has passed Minnesota catcher/outfielder Mike Kvasnicka as the club's fallback option if it sticks to the commissioner's office guidelines again.

8. ASTROS. Josh Sale, of, Bishop Blanchet HS. This is the toughest pick to call in the first 10. Houston has been on Sale for a while, but also loves Georgia prep outfielder Delino DeShields. If the Astros have to have DeShields, they may have to pop him here rather than waiting until pick No. 19.

9. PADRES. Michael Choice, of, Texas-Arlington. Choice and Ball State second baseman Kolbrin Vitek had impressive workouts in San Diego on Thursday. The Padres will take one of them, with Choice rated ahead of Vitek. If they pass on Vitek, don't be surprised if the Red Sox grab him at No. 20.

10. ATHLETICS. Zack Cox, 3b, Arkansas. Oakland is looking at Choice, Colon, Cox and O'Conner, with McGuire also a possibility. In this scenario, Cox makes more sense for a club that took college middle infielders Jemile Weeks and Grant Green with its last two first-round picks. Some evaluators believe Weeks, Green and Colon all could wind up as second base, a logjam that wouldn't help the A's.
