Thats sad, I have quick hands, but I always get scared when a yankee hits a ball towards me in batting practice, I never bring a glove because who needs one, and Im afraid Ima break my hand!

MLB needs to lead the way in extending the net to at least the end of the dug outs. Someone is going to lose their life.

Completely agree. Hockey waited until a poor girl was killed.

If people are going to go to a game and not pay attention they're better off watching from their couch a.k.a. The Best Seat in the House. Although, I don't know what Martin was doing pulling a ball foul during batting practice.

I'm fine with netting TO the dugout, but not above or beyond. If you bring your child or a senior citizen to the game, don't sit in the hot zone.

My seats are on the dugout and I'd HATE looking through the netting. Frankly I'd rather sign a waiver at the gate for every game than sit right behind netting.

Pay attention. Yes it is sad when someone gets hurt, but read the darn ticket. Pay attention to the game, no reason the parents shouldn't have protected that girl. Stay at home if you want netting in the way of the best game in the world.

Really? She was 3.

And any follow up argument would be garbage. The last thing MLB wants to do is alienate parents or make them fearful.

I feel bad for dad and little girl... but we cannot protect people from themselves. You should not be bringing your little kid that close to danger... PERIOD! This is on the dad 100%.

When I brought my little girl to games it was in the outfield or the upperdeck... you just have to sacrifice YOUR view if you want to bring your child to a game...

This is a stupid opinion.

I'd gather that many of the people that get hit with line-drive foul balls are indeed paying attention.

I sit behind home plate at the minor league games a lot and when you are focused on the game, you don't see the net. Eyes are crazy like that.

Yeah, I'm sure this will be in the MLB press release when someone dies....

First off, you need to not be calling other opinions "stupid", because I guarantee, poeple think your "opinion" of extending the net is "stupid", but people aren't stooping to that level. Plus, it's an opinion...and while this one may not be "right", neither is yours.

With that being said...say you extend the netting past the dugout...now what happens when someone in left field (foul territory) gets hit with a ball and dies or goes to the hospital?? Great, do you now extend the netting to there? Hell, why not just extend it all around the field?

At the end of the day, this opinion here is NOT stupid...it's just the same as parents paying attention to what their kids are watching on TV, or listening to in music, or what video games they're playing...parents DO need to pay attention and maybe a 3 year old SHOULDN'T be down in those levels at a baseball game, because as the says always say "pay attention for flying bats and balls". Maybe a 3 year old doesn't have the reflexes to get out of the way quick enough. At the end of the day, how often do you hear these stories?? Not very, because people usually ARE paying attention.

It is indeed a sad story, but where do you draw the line in having to protect everyone? Anyone can be hit by a ball at any time and just about anywhere in the stands.

Simple solution... don't go to the game... everything has inherent risk.

Bringing your 3 yr old that close to trouble is asking for it, and now the little one pays for dad's ignorance. There are certain things you do not do!!! Bad parenting cannot be prevented. Like putting your kid in the front seat of the car without using a properly secured child seat, and she gets tossed through the windshield. Do you sue the car maker? Do you quit driving/riding in a car? No... there were other options for dad and dad chose not utilize them... all of them were not to sit in harms way.

There is netting at the ball parks now... there were many better options to sit... while we are at it lets eliminate ALL step in ball parks. I saw someone fall down a set of stairs and snap an ankle and break their knee cap... is MLB going to wait until someone snaps a femur and cuts an artery and bleeds to death internally? We need ramps so people roll more instead of bounce... and how about cutting all the food into small pieces... saw a little kid take a big bite of a hot dog once and he almost choked to death...

Bleeding hearts dumb down everything... and want someone else to babysit them, take care of them and be responsible for them and their own stupidity.

I disagree completely. I see a LOT of people get drilled that had no idea where the ball was at. They saw everyone around them jerk away and they just flinch. SO many people can't stop chatting with everyone around them. If their life depended on it, they couldn't tell you what the count is, how many outs, who's up, who made the last out, etc. It's going to be one of those nobs that gets seriously hurt and end up being the final straw so we get netting.

Again, I hate the idea of netting beyond the start of the dugout. Plaster warning signs all over, make me sign a waiver, whatever. I certainly wouldn't take my 5 year old daughter to any ballpark and sitting 3 rows into the foul ball hot zone. Similarly I wouldn't take her on insane fair rides operated by carnies. If I took my 75 year old dad to a game, I'd AT LEAST sit in the closer seat to home plate, and bring my glove.

It's not MLBs fault for not having nets, or the dad's fault for bringing her to the game. It's the dad's fault for not paying attention and protecting his kid.

...or sitting some where else away from the risk...

I's a raging liberal and I completely agree with your 1st statement, but are wrong to incorporate "bleeding heart" into the discussion. Along the same lines the ultra-right wing generally feels we can't control ourselves enough to stay away from casinos, adult bookstores, etc. and wants to ban them... which seems like a metaphorical ballpark net to me.

If you go to a Zoo, are the Tigers not in a cage?

If there is an area of the field where the ball has a much higher likely hood of killing or seriously hurting someone, then the league should do what is can to lessen that risk. It only makes sense for them.
