Thank GOD! I hate watching the Sunday games on poorly produced KSDX. About time they put them all on Fox Sports Midwest.

The Cardinals will place their entire television package on Fox Sports Midwest next season, marking the first time the club will not have any of its locally-produced telecasts on over-the-air TV since it began televising games in the 1940s.

The number of the telecasts on so-called "free TV'' had decreased significantly in recent seasons, from about 60 in 1995 to approximately 18 appearing each year on KSDK (Channel 5) under a deal that began in 2007 but expires after this season.

KSDK general manager Lynn Beall was traveling and not available for comment, but station news director Mike Shipley said the matter was out of the station's control.

"We would love to (keep) the games, we tried very hard,'' Shipley said Wednesday. "But it wasn't our decision to make. It was up to the Cardinals.''

Cardinals and FSM officials couldn't immediately be reached.

Cable outlets such as FSM have a distinct advantage over traditional "free-TV'' stations in that they have two ways to raise revenue -- subscriber fees in addition to advertising, which is the primary source for over-the-air entities. That is why so many sporting events are moving to cable, including the British Open golf tourney that begins Thursday. The only live coverage will be on ESPN, the first time it's a cable-only event. And the Bowl Championship Series will follow suit next winter.

The roughly 12 percent of the market that doesn't buy cable or satellite won't be totally shut of Cardinals telecasts as they are with the Blues, who made a similar move to FSM from over-the-air TV last season. KTVI (Channel 2) carries about 10 Cardinals games annually as part of the Fox network's schedule or regional telecasts. No Blues games were selected for NBC's coverage last season.

A decision regarding the team's radio rights for next season is expected soon. Cardinal games currently are broadcast on KTRS (550 AM), but the team is considering other options for 2011 and beyond.

what they should have done was kept those Sunday games on over the air TV and use the FS-MW announcers. Many other clubs use their cable announcers when they do their off-air broadcasts.

I can see going exclusively to cable, it seems like every team is trending that way. I just feel bad for those in a great baseball town like St. Louis who can't afford pay-tv having to give up even just being able to see the Cardinals on Sundays. They still get to see the FOX saturday ones when those occur, though.

Hard to believe the KTRS deal is almost up! It seems like just yesterday when KMOX was kicked to the curb after their decades of loyalty to the cardinals.
