Andre Dawson had a celebrity softball game tonight in Schaumburg, IL - his first appearance after his HOF induction. Lots of old-timers at the game. I got 16 autos on the program cover. Bad thing was it was pretty unorganized and although people brought all kinds of items to sign (myself included), they made an announcement before the signing started that they would only sign the program. I had Don Zimmer's 1948 High School Yearbook with me, but although he looked at it, he wouldn't sign it, saying show organizers wouldn't let him. The players signed in 2 groups, one for the first hour and one for the second. I might have kinda pulled a misdirection play to get back in line and get the second group (which included Zim), I'm sure not many people got these many!
Autos:
Andre Dawson
Bruce Sutter
Gary Carter
Bill Madlock
Lee Smith
Dale Murphy
Al Oliver
Vida Blue
Bill Buckner
George Foster
Dave Parker
Mitch Williams
Jerome Walton
Leon Durham
Warren Cromartie
Don Zimmer (not on cover)
I really went to meet Zimmer. Unfortunately, he's really getting on in years and he had handlers surrounding him. He looked at my yearbook for a second, said he remembered the photo from 1947 of his American Legion team. I had a print out of the homepage of http://www.collectingzim.com and asked him if he had ever seen it. He said he had seen it but that was it. I can't really be upset at the experience because there were about 2000 people in line and just getting his auto and shaking his hand was good enough for me. It's amazing he's still going to events like this. I hope I'm going as strong as him when I'm 79!
I took photos but can't find my camera cord so those I'll have to post later.
Chashawk... if you see this, I have a goodie for your Dawson collection.
