This got me thinking. What records will never be broken again? Here are my choices:

Cy Young's 511 wins.
Chrisy Mathewson's 12 straight 22 or more win seasons
Ty Cobb's career .366 batting average

I can think of more, but what is your take?

I don't mean to turn this into a steroid argument but the Single Season homerun record comes to mind, thanks to people using PEDs. I wonder how people would view a clean player hitting 62+ in a season?

I can see the service record being broken.

You must be using an old book. Afew corrections:

The pitch is 100.9, not 101.9.

The record for K/9 in a single season is 13.41, by Randy Johnson in 2001. Ryan's 11.48 is now #11 on the list, with Randy Johnson having 7 better seasons, Pedro Martinez having 2 better seasons, and Kerry Wood having one.

Randy Johnson averaged 10.61 K/9 in his career.

I've gotta go with Ripken's streak and the two primary stolen bases records: single-season and all-time.

The two most recent players to even put a dent in Ricky Henderson's career stolen base record (1406) were Tim Raines Sr. (802) and Vince Coleman (752). Juan Pierre (502) is the closest active player with Carl Crawford (401) next.

The most stolen bases in a season was 138 by Hugh Nicole. Ricky came close in the 80s with a 130 performance, but nothing else close. The most by an active player is Jose Reyes with 78, back in 2007. Bottom line, will there ever be another play eclipse the 100 stolen base mark in the future?

It's my understanding that several pitchers including Joel Zumaya, Randy Johnson, and Strasburg have all thrown pitches faster than this on record. I believe these three and one I've forgotten were the only players to hit 104 on a radar gun. The other guy may be Matt Anderson but I can't quite remember.

How is Ryan's pitch speed a record?

As mentioned before, Cy Young's 511 wins would be #1. The next closest is almost 100 away (Walter Johnson at 417). Maddux and Clemens are the only modern pitchers to get "close", if you think 156 and 157 wins to tie is "close". No pitcher will ever average 20 wins a year for 25 consecutive years (or 25 wins for 20 years) to get even within 11 of that record.

Cobb's .366 is nearly impossible, but not quite as far out of reach as Young's 511 wins. Rickey Henderson's 1406 Stolen Base record might possibly be the third "safest", but who knows.

As for Ripken's streak, I honestly think that today's selfish baseball player has the ego enough to put his own best interests in front of his team's to try to challenge the consecutive games streak.

(edited to correct Henderson's stolen base total)

It's according to Guinness, who has a guideline of standards which must be met for a record to be established. These include, but are not limited to, the calibration of the machine measuring the speed, as well as having a representative from Guinness present at the time the pitch is thrown.

As others have said...

Cobb's .367

Ripken's "Iron Man" Streak

Rickey's Stolen base record

Ryan's 7 no hitters

Rose's hit record (4,256)

Cy Young's wins (511)

SUPER difficult, but maybe possibly could be broken...maybe....possibly maybe

DiMaggio's 56 game hitting streak. I believe Pete Rose got the closest with 44 consecutive in 1978. I think it can happen, but it's like getting through Contra on 1 life difficult.

Hershiser's 59 consecutive scoreless innings.

While checking through the records, I found one that might slide into #3 behind Cobb (or possibly tied for 2nd place), and I'm embarassed to say I didn't know it:

Career On Base Percentage: Ted Williams - .4817

Second on the list was Babe Ruth at .473. Even Barry Bonds only ended up with .4443. Closest active player is Pujols at .4256. Since taking a walk is considered to be "quaint" by some players in this day and age, I doubt anyone would even get close to Babe, let alone Ted's record.
