Last Friday, Billy Wagner pitched a scoreless 9th inning to earn his 34th save, striking out Angel Pagan to end the game. It was the 1179th strikeout of Wagner's career, a seemingly insignificant accomplishment. But it wasn't.

For pitchers, career rate stats such as ERA require a minimum of 1000 innings pitched. Randy Johnson was the all time leader in strikeouts per 9 innings (K/9) when he retired, with 10.6098 Ks per 9 innings (4875 Ks in 4135.1 IP).

Wagner doesn't have 1000 IP yet. He currently sits at 896.2 IP, but he is the K/9 career king now. Here is how:

To be #1, you have to pass Randy Johnson's 10.6098 K/9. Wagner's 1179th strikeout would give him a K/9 of 10.611 K/9 if he had 1000 IP, so Wagner could feasibly throw 103.1 innings without ever recording a strikeout, and still have a higher career K/9 ratio than Johnson.

So congratulations, Billy Wagner. You have the greatest strikeout rate in Major League history. Wagner celebrated this by going out the next night and striking out the side for his 35th save against the Mets, of course.

True, but he still has to record those last 103 innings *knocks on wood*.

I don't think he actually has to pitch the innings.

The guy from the Braves right now that is batting like .335 or something is short on Plate Appearances to win the batting crown. But at the end of the year, they are allowed to add an "0-for-whatever" to give him the minimum amount. And if he still has the top average, he would be considered the Batting Champ. It's probably the same for pitchers and innings.

Correct. Tony Gwynn won a batting title in 1996, Barry Bonds won OBP titles in 2006 and 2007, and Ryan Braun won a slugging title in 2007...all without having the required number of plate appearances. This was done by adding enough hitless AB's to qualify them for their respective titles, and those results were still higher than the 2nd place finishers.

You can't do this for a statistic like ERA or BB/9 where the LOWEST number wins...just rates where the highest number is rewarded.

Is that the reason Billy wants to retire??? :benson:

If Wagner retires this year........... Octavio Dotel could pass him in 3-4 years when/if he gets to 1000 innings and qualifies legitimately.

right now he has 1010 SOs in 829.1 innings .........= 10.96 K/9 %
and doesnt seem to be slowing down much on the %

*A starting pitcher with a career 9+ is so much more impressive.

Obviously RJ's accomplishments are much more impressive, but anyone that thinks Billy Wagner won't be a HOF is only kidding themselves.
