QUICK TAKE
The Mets went over slot to sign Harvey and Goeddel, making them rare among draft picks in recent club history. Vaughn's fast start and senior values den Dekker and Fraser could make the class even deeper.

POSITION PLAYERS
BEST PURE HITTER: The Mets hope to hit on a few college seniors, including OF Matt den Dekker (5), a Top 100 prospect as a junior who slumped in 2009 for Florida. He was better in 2010, and kept hitting in his debut. He has a good two-strike approach and a line-drive swing he repeats now that he's stopped trying to sell out for power. » BEST POWER HITTER: OF Cory Vaughn (4) hit 14 home runs for short-season Brooklyn, though that's less than a third of the way to his father Greg's big league single-season high. He has strength and plenty of bat speed. » FASTEST RUNNER: OF Tillman Pugh (15) is an excellent athlete who has turned in some 6.5-second 60s. He missed the spring season at Division II Sonoma State (Calif.). » BEST DEFENSIVE PLAYER: Den Dekker's above-average speed plays best in center field, where he has excellent instincts, great range and an average arm.
PITCHERS
BEST FASTBALL: RHP Matt Harvey (1) touched 97 in the spring and sits in the 91-95 mph range. The Mets didn't see much of him as he signed late and had to leave instructional league due to a family matter. RHP Erik Goeddel (24) sat 93-96 mph late in the spring in short stints for UCLA, and senior sign RHP Ryan Fraser (16) sat 92-95 mph in instructional league after being more in the low 90s as a college starter. » BEST SECONDARY PITCH: Harvey throws both a slider and a curve, and the slider has its plus moments. The Mets prefer his power curve and give it 70 grades on the 20-80 scouting scale.

BEST PRO DEBUT: Vaughn batted .307/.396/.557 and led the New York-Penn League in slugging and ranked second in homers and RBIs (56). Brooklyn teammate Fraser held opponents to a .155 average while going 3-3, 1.44 with 12 saves. Den Dekker spent a week in the Rookie-level Gulf Coast League and then jumped to low Class A Savannah and batted a combined .328/.388/.451 in 122 at-bats. » BEST ATHLETE: Pugh edges Vaughn and den Dekker. » MOST INTRIGUING BACKGROUND: RHP Akeel Morris, whose fastball has touched 94 mph, is the highest-drafted prep player from the ****** Islands since 1988. Vaughn's dad hit 355 big league homers. Unsigned SS John Franco (42) is the son of the former Mets closer of the same name. » CLOSEST TO THE MAJORS: Harvey, who should make his professional debut in the Florida State League next spring. » BEST LATE-ROUND PICK: Goeddel, who signed for $350,000, and Fraser. 3B Brian Harrison (13) is athletic and swings the bat with some authority; he missed time with a knee injury this spring but slugged .538 in his debut for Brooklyn. » THE ONE WHO GOT AWAY: New York tried to sign summer follow OF Drew Martinez (23), who was Fraser's teammate at Memphis, but the eligible sophomore returned to college for another season after hitting .359 in the Cape Cod League.
