2010 Draft Report Cards Overview

By Jim Callis and John Manuel
October 22, 2010

E-mail Print

We kick off our offseason prospect coverage with an in-depth look at each team's 2010 draft. Editor in chief John Manuel (most National League clubs, plus the Twins and Yankees) and executive editor Jim Callis (most American League clubs, plus the Cubs, Dodgers and Padres) talked to scouting directors, scouts and player-development officials to evaluate the 30 draft crops.

For most of the categories, only players who signed are eligible, with the exceptions of Most Intriguing Background and The One Who Got Away. Best Late-Round Pick applies to players selected in the 10th round or later. The numbers in parentheses indicate the round in which a player was drafted.

Shane (Miami): Outside of the power tool is Machado that much ahead over a couple young up and coming shortstops, like Hamilton and Profar?

Jim Callis: I think his bat and overall offensive upside are significantly better. Hamilton is a blazing runner (who might not stay at shortstop) and Profar is the slickest defender, but I think Machado will be average or better in all five tools and easily be the best all-around player of the trio.

Wow. Absolutely no respect for Machado.
I think you just have to take into account that these lists combine both HS and College players. He would probably rank around the top 5 prepsters for hit and defensive tools (present power and speed are probably a 50-55 at this point and arm is a 60).
