South Korea beats Taiwan 9-3 (still unofficial), so Choo won't be obligated to serve in the South Korean military. More importantly, he won't have to face the decision of becoming a US citizen to avoid serving. If he was forced to do that it would have made traveling home very difficult. So congrats to Choo, his family, the South Korean team, and of course the Indians (I hope).

And by the way, frack South Korea

Huh?

For requiring all males 19+ to serve in the military. frack South Korea

But awesome for Choo.

I thought South was the better of the 2...

So am I missing something, how does Choo avoid military duty? If SK won, the guys on the team wouldn't have to serve?

I don't know about the rest of the team, but the deal was that if South Korea won that Choo would not have to serve.

Ahh. I see.

I hate the Indians (by default) but I like Choo. He is one of those odd guys that can play for the team that I hate, but I can still like him.

Arbitration eligible for the first time this year. Eligible for free agency after 2013 season. Boras is his agent so its unlikely he will sign an extension with the Indians.

A good friend of mine (also Korean) is close to Choo on a personal level. He actually really likes Cleveland and would like to work out a deal to stay long term.

If we shared a primary border with a country-

1) we're technically still at war with
2) led by certifiable nutjobs
3) desperately reliant on foreign aid
4) whose population is isolated and heavily propagandized
5) holding weekly military parades
6) a nuclear power

I sure as hell would want my boys serving and ready to kick ass as well.

Being Korean myself, I was about the say the same thing. Most people don't realize that technically, North and South are still at war. There was just an armistice...meaning they agreed to stop fighting. Thus, the continual UN military presence and the war exercises and the mandatory enlisting. Luckly, I was born here in the States, but most of my relatives back in Korea have served their time.

I didn't read the article yet, but that's interesting that he got exemption from winning a baseball game. Not sure what his take was on joining the military, but if he was trying to avoid it, this must have been the game of his life!
