Prospects you think are overrated and underrated

Figure I would start a thread about prospects you think are overrated or you think won't be good in the Majors. And vice-versa guys you think are somewhat underrated. Hope this doesn't get bad, I just wanna see who everybody thinks is not as good, as one may think. Sorry if I offend anybody, and I know some of these players are very young and still raw, but this is my opinions.

Here are my overrated list:


Chris Tillman- K/IP are good, but control really needs work.
Bill Rowell- For a power hitter, he lacks overall power. K's are too high.
Elvis Andrus- Potential lead-off hitter shouldn't strikeout so much. Defense is legit, but I just don't know about him.
Adrian Cardenas- Good defensively, but lacks any dominant offensive tool. Average is above average, not much power, not much speed. Ehh overall for me.
Carlos Carrasco- A top 10 pitching prospect should be a little bit more dominant IMO. I'm not sold on Carrasco.


(somewhat) Underrated : (no homerism here, I don't posses any of these players cards)
Taylor Teagarden- Legit power and should be one of the best hitter catchers in the league.
Tim Alderson- Not really underrated, but IMO one of the top pitching prospects in the league, and top on the Giants (sorry Bumgarner fans).
Ike Davis- Big Power that I am a fan of. Great pick by the Mets that will IMO bring them a legit 1B for their future.
Aaron Poreda- Doesn't have huge K/IP stats, but his great control+ ability to keep the ball low leads to a very good pitcher.
Tyler Robertson- Similar to Poreda, with his ability to keep the ball low. He does have more K's and more walks than Poreda, but still could turn out to be a very solid pitcher.

You put Cardenas in there to piss me off lmao. There is nothing about Cardenas though that makes him overrated. Yes, he has all of those things that you mentioned, but he is a very good all around player. He is hard nose and that makes him stand out, but the guy does not strikeout alot either. He had 79 in 501 at bats in his 2007 campaign with Lakewood, and he had 66 in 419 at bats. I actually think he underrated and his card prices show it. He will be a September call-up this year.

Overrated - Angel Villalona. Can anyone say Wily Mo? I will throw in LaPorta as well just to get everyone riled up. He's not the second coming of God; he's the second coming of Pat Burrell.

Underrated - Jeff Niemann. I suppose he wouldn't be so underrated if he was pitching in the big leagues where he belongs.

Matt Laporta - stunk when he go traded and stunk for the US Olympic team
Billy Rowell - Hurts to say this cause I have some stuff of his, but bad attitude at the age of 19 isnt too good
Jeff Samardzija - I dont know what people see in him

Underrated
Matt Dominguez - Ive been saying it since he was drafted this kid can play and watch out for him
Beau Mills - Great Power bat I like him alot
Adrian Cardenas - All round great skill, I think he's goign to suprise alot of people
Kevin Ahrens - Very Young, tough season last year but watch for him to bounce back this up coming season. Can hit for Power and a good average with a nice glove a 3rd

How can Rasmus be underrated?? He has done very little the last 12 months to warrant ANY ATTENTION, let alone being a top 15 prospect...

I don't have a problem with people being excited, but he has to have 1, I mean a SINGLE, professional AB (not the Olympics) before he get a chance at being ranked above LoCain, Jeffress, Lucroy, Salome, and the lot.

And I'd love to be wrong ("oh, woe-is-me, another power-hitting position player ), but you'd think BA stands for "Brett Ass-kissers", not Baseball America...

I do like Ike Davis and I think he will be a solid every day MLB player, but he showed NO power when I saw him play this season. I'm sure he has some but he does not have big power.

I think alot of people have different definitions of what overrated means, personally I think of it as; how much a players cards cost vs. how the players performs

I also find it hard to rate a player as overrated or underrated when they have had little or no professional experience (ie. Posey, Alvarez, Weeks etc)

Thats just me though...

Buster Posey -- not sure he'll show enough power to command $50+ Chrome AU
Elvis Andrus -- seen him play and wasn't impressed
Alcides Escobar -- not enough power in my mind
Greg Halman -- not many guys get by with 200 Ks a year
Gordon Beckham -- ceiling of Stephen Drew in my mind

Engel Beltre -- don't see it happening
Aaron Poreda

Underrated:
Derek Holland -- Absolute stud in the making
Dexter Fowler -- only 1 RC in 2004. Lots of money to be made
Tim Alderson -- untouchable dating back to the AFLAC game
Jordan Zimmerman -- only 1 RC in 2007, flown under the radar
Zach Collier -- young and relatively polished
Wilmer Flores -- very close race between Flores and Fernando Martinez. Martinez chromes are $55, Flores are $25.

Hmm...why do sooo many people have Ajax as overrated?

What is he thought to be to the general public...

I always saw him as a guy with all average tools who was athletic, just a very solid player...Don't really think he is overrated...
