Granted, most modern GU cards can be had for a buck of two but I'm here to say that some of the nicer GU sets from the early-2000s are still very collectible.

I lost all three of these auctions for single-swatch GU pieces this weekend....

Some people don't want to collect crap.

I think more and more people will start going after the older stuff. Back when the hobby was competitive and companies put out nice stuff.

I was watching the Ripken.
It was the first I've seen at auction since I picked up mine 8 years ago.
The Ripken is /55, so they rarely pop up!

I agree with you that it is not a typical GU set. There are way too many people trying to put the set together there there were cards made.....

Russ - What Ripkens do you still need from the set? Or do you have them all?

There are still people putting those sets together like the UD 500 Hr club and the UD 3000 Hit club.

Yes, this goes to show that what's most important isn't the GU, its the entire card including the GU...which is the way it should be IMO...if not people would only buy full jerseys and memorabilia.

The three cards in the original post are from one set.
Its a collectors set, that is what makes it sell for so much, not the fact that it is GU.

Exactly. There are from a set that I'm trying to put together.

I didn't mean for everyone to take the title so literally. Yes, we all know that a Billy Martin GU card can be had for a buck. I was just astonished to find the prices so high on these cards.......and I've been collecting the set for 2 years now!

Wow.

Sorry you couldn't snag those ones Chris :(

All I have is the Hat with inscription, and a Jersey.
Still need the Bat, multi, and multi auto (which I'll never afford)

Scotty, you don't even want to know what I paid for mine when these actually booked well.
Purchased it a few months after release....

Don't tell me!

(But on the bright side if you ever were to sell it you would still get a decent chunk of change back)

Russ - I'll be sure to keep my eyes open for Ripkens and let you know.

Scotty - Thanks for the kind words. Yep, I suppose the chase is the fun part......just be glad the Doerr isn't in the Club

Less then half on my buy in....
Hopefully mine would sell more having the inscription though.
