Was looking at my O'Neill list today sorting thru for autographs, realized he had 96 autos out of 1300 cards, which is about 7% of all his cards. I wanted to see where that stood among others. I tried to include all those with close to 10,000 cards and also some popular players with a decent amount of cards.

Autographs as percentage of total cards:

Stan Musial 1348/4355 = 30.95%
Ryne Sandberg: 1260/4421 = 28.5%
Ozzie Smith 1085/3930 = 27.6%
Yogi Berra 921/3376 = 27.3%
Don Mattingly 1509/5732 = 26.3%
Nolan Ryan 2376/9651 = 24.6%
George Brett 949/3963 = 23.9%
Will Clark 505/2611 = 19.3%
Cal Ripken Jr 2400/12665 = 18.9%
Tony Gwynn 1392/7531 = 18.5%
Eric Chavez 621/4109 = 15.1%
Carlos Zambrano 223/2007 = 11.1%
Curt Schilling 643/6164 = 10.4%
Roger Clemens 1190/12212 = 9.7%
Ken Griffey Jr 1206/13321 = 9.1%
Alex Rodriguez 1647/18,207 = 9.0%
Albert Pujols 1092/12653 = 8.6%
Derek Jeter 1044/12489 = 8.4%
Todd Helton 498/6090 = 8.2%
Jeff Bagwell 496/6180 = 8.0%
Andruw Jones 557/6926 = 8.0%
Chipper Jones 868/11018 = 7.9%
Gary Sheffield 582/7483 = 7.8%
Randy Johnson 774/10069 = 7.7%
Manny Ramirez 748/10145 = 7.4%
Frank Thomas 684/9972 = 6.9%
Mike Piazza 601/9134 = 6.6%
Vladimir Guerrero 697/10657 = 6.5%
Sammy Sosa 468/7612 = 6.1%
Greg Maddux 633/10591 = 6.0%
Pedro Martinez 489/8392 = 5.8%
Ivan Rodriguez 361/7122 = 5.1%
Barry Bonds 366/11522 = 3.2%
Mark McGwire 133/4693 = 2.8%
Hideki Matsui = 85/4382 = 1.9%
Larry Walker 51/3880 = 1.3%
Ichiro Suzuki 107/8679 = 1.2%

Not a terrible surprise, but to compare how low that is...
Mickey Mantle 152/11368 = 1.3%

Even Mickey Mantle edges out Ichiro!

I can't believe some of the retired stars have close to 30% autographs, I really feel for those who collect those players. Anyway, after all my number crunching thought it was amusing and wanted to share. Feel free to add others.

Wow, Ripken has almost as many autographed cards as Will Clark has TOTAL. (also, not really a surprise)

And ok, I'll add

Jeff Cirillo: 0.7%

We have a new leader!

Exchange auto cards are not included under autographs in the OPG but listed separately as EXCH. This won't affect the overall numbers a whole lot but wanted to mention it in case some player collectors want to correct their personal lists.

Maybe Kinda cheating but:
Randal Grichuk: 47/89 52.80%
WOW!!!

Lol, I had to look him up. Yes, I only included guys with many many cards otherwise would really throw off the numbers. Even O'Neill was left of the list.

Dinesh Patel 40/66 = 60.6%

Will try to add some of the newer figures to the OP.

In that case, Ryno's new total is 1264/4421 = 28.6%. :D

And hence why Mcgwire autos are through the roof!!!! LOL I bet if you did a football one Peyton Manning would be pretty high. Seems he's got autos everywhere. And of course Jordon with basketball.

One of the most interesting posts I've read in a long time.

Most of the retired guys had very few cards made while they played (figure just a couple a year) and while they'll often have base cards in sets like Greats of the Game and other throwback sets, their autographs can be hits in pretty much every set. This is especially true with guys like Musial and Berra who are two of the best ever, but are relatively cheap. It makes a lot of sense to insert their autographs in packs.

brouthercard - Here you go...Tiger Woods 180/858 = 21.0%

Topnotchsy - Forgot about Musial, good call. He's past the 30%. From HOFers I think Feller would be among the top ones, but he has so few cards compared to the rest.

Bob Feller 617/1700 = 36.3%.
