I've oftentimes thought that this is actually a bidding strategy employed to give the illusion of copious bidding activity.

While it all really constitutes one single bid, a passer by, who fails to check the bid history, might see a high bid count as excess market competition and move on.

although your logic is sound, i doubt it ever happens.
i want something, i take a shot no matter what anyone else has done.
