It has been a terrible pick:

2009 -Donovan Tate -padres
2008- Eric Hosmer- Royals
2007- Josh Vitters-Cubs
2006- Evan Longoria-RAYS
2005- Jeff Clement-Mariners
2004- Philip Humber- Mets
2003- Kyle Sleeth- Tigers
2002- Christopher Gruler- Reds
2001- Dewon Brazelton- Rays
2000- Luis Montanez- Cubs

Only thing that saved the Rays in 2006 is Longoria having a poor interview with the Rockies in 2006. Royals had to many good players in 2008 to get it wrong.

The sad thing about Muson is that he really was trying to make it. Last spring he got invited to the Padres camp as an NRI and for some reason I had a GU bat i needed him to sign. I ended up talking with him for about 10 minutes and he said that he just wanted to play ball, he didn't care for who, where or for what; he just wanted to play-he also said he wouldnt give up. Very sad to see someone with the push and drive to end up with nothing. I hope it works out for him, however I also hope the diamondbacks dont get screwed in the draft this year with #3, the local papers here in Phx tag Hultzen as the 'backs pick though...hope it works out! I'll be watching Monday with high hopes :)

Here's a link to the original WSJ article, which has more information:
http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052702303745304576359612358976204.html

The story isn't really that there's a '3rd pick curse'... it's that after the top 2 picks, there's a huge dropoff in general. The third pick generally matches up okay with the 4-9 picks in the draft (based on WAR). The differences between the picks are relatively small given the tiny sample size.

However, one HUGE confounding factor is the tendency for some teams not to pick the best player available (in order to save money). The draft ordering means less in baseball than it does in most other pro sports.
