Odorizzi had his first really bad start of the season last time out. His usually stellar control deserted him. It'll be interesting to see if he's hitting a wall or if he rebounds nicely.

I think Bryan Mitchell gets the Opening Day nod for the Staten Island Yanks. Kid has big time stuff.

If he does blow up, the super my friend bought for cheap will blow up... He also picked up the Wil Myers Sterling 1/1 and is going to have the rainbow soon...

New talent begins journey in short-season ball
Many burgeoning prospects to get first tastes of pro competition
By Jonathan Mayo / MLB.com | 06/17/11 10:00 AM ET

For most, the 2011 season has been going on for two months. For others, it's just about to begin.

The short-season and rookie leagues in Minor League Baseball begin action on Friday. While baseball has been in full swing, most of the players on the 22 short-season and 46 rookie-level clubs will get their first opportunity to strut their stuff this year.

That includes many top prospects from across all 30 organizations. Using Prospect Watch as a guide, there are 17 players who appear on a team's Top 10 list who will be playing for a short-season club. Nearly all of them -- No. 8 Phillies prospect Aaron Altherr began the season with full-season Lakewood but will join Williamsport in the New York-Penn League -- will be making their 2011 debuts.

There will, of course, be many players not on Top 10 lists (at least not yet) who will debut in these leagues. As members of the 2011 Draft class sign, many will head to these circuits to get their feet wet as professionals.

Cases in point: No. 10 overall pick Cory Spangenberg of the Padres and No. 29 selection Joe Panik of the Giants. Both will be playing in the Northwest League starting this weekend. Supplemental first-rounder Jace Peterson and third-rounder Matthew Andriese will join Spangenberg in Eugene, Ore.

Others who were selected in the first five rounds who signed quickly and will get going in short-season ball include:

• Adrian Houser (Astros, second round, Gulf Coast League)
• Alex Santana (Dodgers, second round, Arizona League)
• Harold Martinez (Phillies, second round, NY-Penn League)
• Justin Bianco (D-backs, third round, Pioneer League)
• Evan Marshall (D-backs, fourth round, Pioneer)
• Bobby Crocker (A's, fourth round, NY-Penn)
• Jason King (Tigers, fourth round, NY-Penn)
• Cody Asche (Phillies, fifth round, NY-Penn)
• Nick Tropeano (Astros, fifth round, NY-Penn)
• Beau Taylor (A's, fifth round, NY-Penn)

The 16-team, rookie-level Appalachian League, which opens on Tuesday, might be the place to be for the top-prospect set. Eight Top 10 prospects will be there, highlighted by two No. 3 prospects: Guillermo Pimentel of the Mariners and Miguel Sano of the Twins.

Several other players will be making their professional debuts in the Appy League and elsewhere. Josh Sale, one of the Rays' first-round picks in 2010, will play for the first time. He'll be joined in Princeton (Appalachian League) by fellow first-rounder Justin O'Conner, who got to play in the Gulf Coast League last summer.

Two from the Pirates' Top 10 will be making their professional debuts. Stetson Allie, the 2010 second-rounder who is No. 2 on the Pirates' list, is tentatively slated to pitch Monday for State College in the New York-Penn League. No. 6 Luis Heredia, Pittsburgh's prized signing out of Mexico, will pitch in the Gulf Coast League, which begins play on Monday.

"Short-season is a great opportunity for guys to transition into more of a professional baseball setting away from the chain-link environment of extended Spring Training," Pirates farm director Kyle Stark said. "The lights come on, there are fans in the seats and the guys have to deal with the daily travel grind. Some guys thrive in this setting and some struggle to adjust. It is a critical step in the development process."

Heredia isn't the only international signee who will be making his debut in the United States. Rangers No. 10 prospect David Perez will pitch Friday's opener for Spokane in the Northwest League. The 18-year-old right-hander has pitched in the Dominican Summer League previously and is the latest in Texas' efforts to aggressively mine talent in Latin America.

Perez won't be alone in Spokane, though, as he'll be joined by many other international prospects as well as 2011 draftees to form one of the best examples of what short-season ball is all about.

"We're very excited about the upcoming short-season teams," Rangers farm director Scott Servais said. "We are extremely young in Spokane, with Perez, Jorge Alfaro, Rougned Odur and Hanser Alberto playing in their first real games under the lights. Combine those guys with Zach Cone and William Lamb out of the Draft. Spokane is a great venue for our guys to go out and get their first taste of pro ball."
