Now why would he be there with the contract he has?

Boredom. Or he's competative in other areas of his life. Look at MJ. Countless others who don't need the money but the thrill that's associated with the game

Edit your title. He is being investigated for being involved in an illegal POKER game. Poker is not all gambling, its a skill game, which for some reason everyday people like yourself never seem to understand. You and other misguided noobs like you insist on calling poker "gambling".

Slot machines, blackjack, craps, roulette = Gambling
Poker is more like chess with an element of chance (say 20-30%)

Heres hoping more people will understand this and stop calling Poker what it is not.

So all the gaming commissions who say, you're wrong are misguided noobs? I didn't know Doyle Brunson was a member on the boards.

Poker is a form of gambling. There might be more of a skill involved and it is not totally a game of chance. But anything where $$ is involved in a bet if a form of gambling. And I am not just some noob I play poker all the time...

I fail to see how playing poker means crap to anyone. So f'in stupid that people in the sports world care when an athlete plays poker.

gambling in high stakes games where cocaine, and I would imagine organized crime associates, are present isn't an issue?

Despite the fact I think A-Rod is a Dbag, I can't really get all outraged at this.

Except....

If he was repeatedly told not to do it (as is alleged), and yet he continues to? Then yeah, maybe this will get his attention.

Then no one that played in the 70's should get into the HOF since that's pretty much the clubhouse back then. And what is your source for who is poker associates were? How do you know it wasn't Tiger, MJ, and Giambi at the table?

MLB is more concerned about the elements he is associating himself with. Poker is a sidenote to the coke and big money changing hands. This environment is what MLB doesn't want Arod involved with.

Considering gambling almost killed the game about 100 years ago it wouldn't be surprising if ARod gets a big punishment.

From Wikipedia:
After the 1919 scandal and some further game-fixing incidents in 1920 had been resolved, and with Landis having taken over, the gambling problem apparently went away, for the most part, for decades. Commissioners have taken an almost fanatical interest in the subject, suspending well-known individuals for lengthy times just for having been seen with gamblers; Leo Durocher, manager of the Brooklyn Dodgers, was suspended by Commissioner Happy Chandler for the 1947 season for just that reason.

After their retirement, Mickey Mantle and Willie Mays served for a while as greeters at legal gambling casinos. Commissioner Bowie Kuhn issued a ban against them. Newspaper articles of the time pointed out that Mantle and Mays played before there were large player salaries. Their bans were finally lifted during Commissioner Peter Ueberroth's term.

He was playing poker with the likes of Ben Affleck, Leo Dicaprio, Matt Damon, Tobey Mcguire and a few other big money guys.

If he gets in trouble for this that would be a complete joke.

The MLB ignored the DUI's earlier in the season, which actually put other individuals lives at risk.

Playing poker with a bunch of millionaires in your spare time should not warrant any discipline other than a possible fine.

Are these the same games that the Ponzi scheme guy was in? I remember reading that Tobey McGuire won over $300,000 in games that were partially funded in money from some shady guy.

There are a lot of things that were happening in the 70's that we as a culture longer allow so that argument is literally, obtuse.

And I don't need a "source" as I said, and I am quoting here so follow along "I would imagine organized crime associates"

Big dollar, high stakes poker games don't just spring up. These activities need things like security, catering, cash....drugs. Again, that part is conjecture, but what isn't is that there was cocaine there and he was told before to not engage in these activities.
