So my family has a cabin on a lake northwest of the Twin Cities and I take my family to visit every summer. My sister's in-laws have a cabin about 30 minutes away and they drive through rural Minnesota to go from lake to lake. On one of the trips they notice a sign on the front of the store called Max Bats. Since my brother and I both play in a wood bat league, she decided to take us to their store and get us each a bat when we came out for a visit.

In the middle of nowhere is this store with a little sign out front. We walk into a small showroom and the VP of Sales, Paul Jonhson, greets us. (I don't think they get a lot of walk-ins .) They have a bunch of bats on racks and front and center is an enormous poster of Jimmy Rollins with his Max Bat. Apparently he's been a loyal customer since 2005 (an MVP season will do that.) They had some other advertising cards of their MLB clientele on the walls and I asked if they had any of the cards available, but unfortunately they did not.

Since my son has a good start on a Rollins collection, I looked through it and found one card where you can tell Rollins is using a Max Bat. My first card in my Max Bat logo collection.




Did a little checking on COMC and found a few more Rollins, plus some Markakis, Jonny Gomes, Brian Roberts, Ross Gload, and Lou Marson. (They have a ton of MLB players listed as using their bats, but from what I can tell, most of them switch a lot.) Markakis' 2008 Goudey is a better example of the Max Bat logo.

So to pick up on my story with my visit to Max Bats, we go into Paul Johnson's office and he has a row of 10-15 gamers. (Players send him bats and ask him to make a Max Bat following the specification of the provided bat.) He has another storage area where he keeps all the bats that players previously sent him where he has hundreds of bats

He picks up one from Josh Hamilton that has a huge crack. Hamilton claimed to have "barreled" it and had sent it back without a note, so he didn't know what to do with it. And I'm thinking to myself, I could find it a nice home...

He pulled out another bat from Manny, but he didn't think it was a gamer. Manny had sent him a bat previously and it was covered with pine tar and hair (from resting his bat on his shoulder and getting his hair in it) and this one was clean. He joked that he should have charged Manny a hair removal fee because he couldn't copy the bat until it was cleaned.

He also had a picture from the newspaper with his twins Hunter and Torii. At the time, Torii Hunter played for the Twins and used Max Bats. The picture is with Paul and his wife at the hospital with the twins and in the middle a smiling Torii Hunter. Pretty cool that he would come to the hospital.

Brooten, MN. (St. Cloud is fairly close)

There are not a lot of cards where you can see the bat logo. The Heritage cards seem to be pretty good in that respect. I've found about 25-30 Max Bat cards now, but they are all sitting in COMC waiting for shipment.

It seems like Rollins and Markakis go out of their way to prominently display their bag logos when they can. In the Rollins 2008 UD Masterpiece he is literally hugging the bat. In the 2008 Goudey and Topps Co-Signers for Markakis, he holds the bat pretty deliberately.

Here's the list of players they say are using Max Bats. They really got in tight with the big KC prospects.

It's definitely a great bat, and that's actually pretty close to what it went for on MLB Auctions last year (the 2006 bat also sold in the 400s, at an auction during a Rays game). I've been looking for his 2011 pink bat on MLB Auctions, which could potentially be cheaper now that he's been traded, but it hasn't shown up yet.

Are those the only two models of Max Bats of Gomes you've seen? When we took a tour of the Max Bat facility they have a machine where they put the billets in the lathe. Each player has their own floppy disc (yes, an actual floppy disc) with their name on it and specifications for their bat. Put in the floppy, load the billet, press a button, and the lather trims the bat to size. They can load and add multiple billets so they can pump out a dozen bat fairly quickly.

It's definitely a great bat, and that's actually pretty close to what it went for on MLB Auctions last year (the 2006 bat also sold in the 400s, at an auction during a Rays game). I've been looking for his 2011 pink bat on MLB Auctions, which could potentially be cheaper now that he's been traded, but it hasn't shown up yet.

I feel ya. The only GU bat I own is Jason Jennings', and it set me back ~$20. I won the auction for $8. :lol: So if they dropped a pink Jennings bat on ebay for $500, no matter how much I wanted the pink bat, I could never hit the BIN. But that MOMMA GOMES thing is so cool!!

Cool idea for a PC. Good luck on your searches. On a side note, when I moved to MN in 2005 I found a wood bat league to join and a few of the guys were swinging Max Bats. And after using the team's composite bats for the first year, I have used a maple 191 model Max Bat since. Good bats and it's also nice to support a local company.

According to the Max Bat brochure, the 191 is their "most popular model with players making the switch from metal to wood". I liked the G141 Pro Gold Series, but they only had a 32" bat in the showroom. Very dense and a little heavier than I am used to, but I'm going to give the 33" a try next season.

Here is my current Max Bat player checklist, now up to 58 items. I think creating the checklist is going to be almost as difficult as acquiring the cards.
