or we could talk about stats that actually mean something...

Saying he's single-handedly keeping them afloat is quite arbitrary as well.

yeah, since his average is the only thing worth talking about.....

and when having a better record than the dbacks means playing the phillies or the braves in the first round, he's keeping us afloat.

In a year where high averages are hard to come by, i think what he is doing is pretty incredible.

Well, he's definitely helping them, but not single-handedly. How about their pitching staff and other runners being on base? I didn't see Braun going 6 innings with 13 k's today. I also saw Braun benefiting from his teammates going nutso off a washed-up former steroid-induced has been that has an almost 6.00 ERA.

Mark Kotsay's WPA last night was 2.09 compared to Braun's 0.79. That means Kotsay had more of a "hand" in the Brewers winning yesterday than Braun did.

I love Braun, he's a god. If you're going to argue his case for MVP, don't do it rashly.

:) I just like these arguments. Damn you for not continuing to humor me!

Brewers/Braves should be a good series. good luck.

:) I'll be at the TED yelling my onions off. :)

Let me play Devils Advocate here and ask why you think Braun should get it over someone like a Matt Kemp who has more HR's, RBI's, SB's, and virtually the same OBP? If you say because Braun's playing for a contending team, couldn't you make the argument that Kemp's accomplishments are even more impressive considering the atrocity of his team? I like Braun and it wouldn't bother me one bit if he wins but just curious why you put him "hands down" over Kemp or anybody else without any eye-popping stats.

Braun should be the MVP. If there were ever a formula for it, I would think a 30/30 season during which you win the batting title and have the highest OPS would be that formula. Kind of like 200+ K, sub 2.50 ERA and 20 wins would lock it up for a pitcher. There's just not a lot of "what if" there. Kemp is easily #2 though.

the mvp should be kennedy or upton.
why would someone want to make their first round opponent the easier team? wouldnt you want to beat the best team first? really, it has always been my view that knocking out the best would make it easier. if you're so bad prove it
braun is raking this year but not always against the best.
kemp is just kemp, when it aint on the line he shines.
the best is in my sig :p

Braun has great numbers no doubt as does Kemp. But tell me this, who has better protection in their lineup? Braun hitting in front of Fielder? Or Kemp hitting in front of Loney/Rivera/Uribe? As others have noted, Kemp is doing it on a team that for most of the year has had almost no offense save Kemp himself. Park factors matter too. If you look at BA/OPB/SLG/OPS both Kemp and Braun have pretty similar road numbers:

Kemp 324/406/584/989
Braun 320/381/572/953

But at home Braun has much better numbers. To some degree we do have to acknowledge that Dodger stadium is considered more of a pitcher's park than Milwaukee's? http://espn.go.com/mlb/stats/parkfactor

Home numbers:

Kemp 307/383/529/912
Braun 347/415/622/1.037

Where did you come up with this?

Tie game 190 at bats .997 OPS
Late & close 83 at bats .916 OPS- yes this is an actual category by baseball reference.
within 1 run 317 at bats .987 OPS
within 2 runs 400 at bats .983 OPS
within 3 runs 464 AB .943 OPS
within 4 runs 499 AB .950 OPS
Ahead 168 AB .968 OPS but only a .297 avg
Behind 197 AB .891 OPS but a .330 avg

innings 7-9 153 ab .978 OPS
innings 4-6 198 ab .807 OPS

2 out runners in scoring postion is 58 at bats only .879 OPS,
but compare that to Braun's 2 out RISP 50 AB's .795 OPS

Kemp in wins 276 AB 1.060 OPS
in losses 279 AB .841 OPS
Braun is 1.140 to .761 so he is even more crucial to them winning games.

You have absolutely nothing to back up that Kemp hasn't done it when it mattered. I know he has at least 3 walkoff hits as well, it is probably 4 or 5 but i've seen 3. 2 were homers.

How is that relevant to this year's MVP discussion? That also shows he is really good when he gets farther in the playoffs...

Sorry Kemp/Rihanna lovers, Braun is the clear MVP. It ain't happening for Kemp unless he somehow hits 7 home runs over the last few games to get to 40/40...then it still might be Braun.

Braun hands down.

You have to factor in that all of the Brewer's games over the last month or so have been much more important than the Dodgers games during that same time. Braun's at bats have then been much more pressure packed and important than Kemp's, and during that time Braun has been at his best.

Brewers > Dodgers. Braun has those stats and leading the Brewers back to the playoffs...MVP. Kemp is having an amazing season though statistically
