Twins, Mariners talking Young for Washburn deal? The Seattle Post-Intelligencer, reported Tuesday that the Minnesota Twins and Seattle Mariners recently discussed a trade of outfielder Delmon Young for left hand pitcher Jarrod Washburn and catcher Jeff Clement.

The Twins attempted to obtain Washburn last summer. Washburn, a Wisconsin native, will make $10.35 million this season in the final year of his contract. The Mariners are trying to shed salary, so they can add Bobby Abreu or Ken Griffey, Jr., and the Twins have room to add.

Seattle might be willing to eat part of Washburn's salary in such a deal. Adding Washburn would give the Twins one veteran in their starting pitching staff. As good as the Twins' five young starters were last season, it's overly optimistic to think they'll all be that healthy and good again in 2009.

If the deal were for Washburn straight up, the Twins' best offer would be Boof Bonser or Philip Humber, one of their pitchers who are out of options. Again, the key for Seattle in a Washburn deal would be the salary relief.

I really like Delmon and do not want to see him go. I think if the Twins just gave him a chance and let him get a few years under his belt, he will come around.

I think its pretty smart.

Clement would likely DH and go behind the dish at times to give Mauer a break.

Maybe they will even try to convert Mauer to 3rd eventually.

From ESPN's MLB Rumors on February 4:

The Twins have "lost their appetite" for a trade involving Jarrod Washburn of the Mariners, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reported.

The newspaper added that it is possible the Mariners wanted the Twins to revisit the Washburn idea to free up some payroll. The Twins reportedly agreed to take on Washburn's contract in August (including all $10.35 million for 2009) before Mariners president Chuck Armstrong nixed the deal.

"They missed their chance," a Twins source told the Star Tribune.

This makes sense for Clement and Washburn...both will be a lot closer to their families (IA and WI respectively).

In regards to Clement being "blocked" because of Mauer, he was already blocked in Seattle after they extended Johjima's contract. And let's be honest here, the Mauer's bat is incredibly important to the Twins and they are well into discussions of shifting positions to keep his bat fresh.

Washburn is too expensive so the Mariners should throw in some cash to any deal that includes Washburn.

With the amount of $$ that the Sox/Yanks will throw at him following the 2010 season, Im not so sure that Mauer ends up in MINN long term anyways..This seems like a deal that would make a lot of sense for both teams.
