Those of us that were collecting back then were about to rip into the 1987 Topps Wax Goodness.
You see, in our area they would drive to PA and pickup a truckload of wax in time for xmas.

Hard to believe it was 25 years ago!

1987 is something of a modern classic, but I'd be hard put to rate the designs for 1985 or 1986 over almost anything that came afterwards (except 1995 Fleer).

I can still remember sitting at my late grandmother's kitchen table on December 23 or 24th of 1986 and ripping my first box of 1987 Topps. I remember getting a Cal Ripken card in my first pack. I think I now have close to 300 sets of '87 Topps. It might not be my favorite set ever but it's up there.

My favorite set of all time.

Btw, topps is REALLY missing the boat here.
Would be so cool to have a "modern heritage" product using 87t design.

afterall, 87 topps is when the hobby blew up and that rookie crop was insane back then.

It's also amazing to think that when we were collecting 1987 Topps cards, the 25 year old set was the 1962 Topps set, which seemed incredibly vintage and rare.

There have a 1987 Topps throwback insert in 2012 Topps.

Blurry photography, woodgrain borders, horrible collation (it took me 4 boxes to finish one set when I was 6)...JUST THINK ABOUT IT!

Some day, you'll realize the present ain't so bad. The Beatles are nearly all dead, Topps sucks, and your favorite team is basically irrelevant. Stop living in the past

A big time rookie class made 1987 a great year.

Sure, they aren't worth crap, but great memories trump modern day value to me.

Thank you for this post.

I guess I never realized how many of us started collecting in 1987. I'm now 38, so to think that I've basically been collecting for two-thirds of my life is a little odd.

Am I the only one who misses cards to cut out, on the bottoms of boxes???

I started in 1988 with Score but this was the first complete set my Dad bought me for Christmas. I remember spending the next week putting the set in pages and I still use the set for IP graphing.

I cant imagine how many packs of 87 topps i bought and how much time we all spent trading. At the time, i somehow was able to put together enough cards to trade for a 73 schmidt rookie which my memory says was basically flawless. Traded it to a dealer for a few boxes of wax and some other crap.

For those who collected the entire set, do you remember the last card that you needed to complete it? Mine was Chuck Tanner, who was pictured as the Braves manager.
