Maybe the D-backs don't consider him a "once in a generation pitcher" as some board members do, hahah

By Tim Dierkes [December 8 at 8:52am CST]

THURSDAY, 8:49am: The A's and D'Backs have discussed the names of many prospects as a possible return for Cahill, even including Trevor Bauer, reports ESPN's Buster Olney. Bauer, I should note, can't even be included in a deal as a player to be named later until late January.

::facepalm:: :shock:

Hoping this isn't the 2007 offseason all over again. Not sure why Kevin Towers feels the next couple years are the D-backs best shot.

You can mark my words. Bogus info.

Not only can he not be traded until January, if not later, but you don't trade a coveted (and close to MLB ready) #3 overall pick like that.

IS AZ that desperate, even with that extremely loaded system?

They shouldn't trade him, and they shouldn't be desperate. They have the best young pitching in the game. If they are patient, this team will be a powerhouse. HOWEVER, I do really like Gio. I a trade might make sense, it is all about the assets that would need to get moved.

Correct, they can't officially move teams. BUT, they can be players to be named later at any point.

im not too surprised at this report, as probably any team with frontline players (ie Cahill) are going to ask about Bauer's availability. his name WILL come up, but i dont think it's going to be because Towers is offering him up, or something like that. on that note, move Skaggs for one of those two A's pitchers. Kennedy/Cahill/Hudson/Bauer looks mighty fine to me.

Not at any point. A PTBNL has to be named within six months. So Bauer, or any draftee, can be 'traded' six months to the day before they signed. No idea when Bauer signed but assume it was at the deadline. If so, he can't be a PTBNL for a couple more months.

Bauer signed late July, so he could be a PTBNL around the end of January.
No doubt people would ask for Bauer in any trade, but it's Towers comments about how he is willing to move top prospects than concerns me.

Kevin Towers this morning:

"I've never said anybody is untouchable if the right deal presents itself," Towers said. "If we can justify the dollars and it makes us better now and in the future, you've got to be open to (trading) all of your best guys. Not that any of them are easily moved, but prospects are prospects...there's no guarantees of what they're ultimately going to do."

Gio Gonzalez for Jarrod Parker or Tyler Skaggs wouldn't be that much of a risk.

That wouldn't happen.

Beane wanted Jesus Montero, Mason Williams, and Banuelos/Betances for Gonzalez.

Thanks to Ned Colletti doing Ned Colletti things this offseason the Dodgers won't be relevant again until 2014 even with a new owner in 2012. The Giants still can't hit and the Padres and Rockies seem to be treading water. These next two seasons would seem to be a very good time for the Diamondbacks to take their best shot.

They aren't trading Bauer. The D-Backs "talking about" trading him is likely about the same as when they were "talking about" trading Justin Upton; sure, they'll listen, but their asking price will be north of what most sane people would offer.

If Beane really asked for that package, he is crazy.

Somewhat unrelated, but Bauer's stock seems to have gone up since his cards have come out. I don't recall the initial sales prices, but recently he's gotten some positive press and it looks like his cards are responding as prices have been heating up.

According to the radio here in AZ:
Gambo620: Diamondbacks closing in on trade for Oakland pitcher Trevor Cahill. Will give up a prospect....

A follow up tweet said it will NOT be Tyler Skaggs.

ETA: Bauer can't be traded obviously, so I'm guessing it's jarrod Parker as of now
