Question about shipping

I have read and been told to put a peanut or some tissue in a envelope for shipping reasons. why?

According to postal regulations, the envelope has to be 3/4" thick at some part to qualify for Delivery Confirmation on 1st Class Mail. The peanut is just to make it thick enough, since a padded envelope and card generally isn't. There are other ways to qualify, but this is the most used/easiest.

I'm always amazed the packing peanut trick doesn't get the mailer into a "nonmachineable" category with extra postage needed due to irregular thickness of the bubble mailer.
