If you pay through PayPal are you protected at all as a buyer? For example, if the seller doesn't ship the item are you able to do anything through PayPal to get your money back? Or does it have to be through eBay?

Yep when you pay for goods or services not through gift you're 100% protected as a buyer.

I always use my credit card through paypal as well. That way I can go that route to get my money back if needs be. I'm not sure if the extra protection really helps or not but it makes me feel better.

I think this is the mentality that has forced Ebay/Paypal to be so damn hard on sellers.
