Wow.

Cubs Acquire Anthony Rizzo
By Ben Nicholson-Smith [January 6, 2012 at 1:02pm CST]
The Cubs have acquired first baseman Anthony Rizzo and right-hander Zach Cates from the Padres for right-hander Andrew Cashner and outfielder Kyung-Min Na, the teams announced.

“The acquisition of Yonder Alonso provided us the flexibility to make this trade and acquire a quality, young power arm in Andrew Cashner,” Padres GM Josh Byrnes said. “We are happy to add a pitcher with the pedigree of Cashner and an outfielder with the athleticism of Na.”

The Cubs are presumably out of the running for free agent first baseman Prince Fielder with the acquisition of Rizzo.

Theo is busy.

Not really a surprise. A trade for Rizzo was imminent after the Latos/Alonso trade.

Rizzo get reunited with Theo who really liked him at the time of the Gonzalez trade

TRUE! I think Rizzo has a bright future and this puts him in a big market.

Any coincidence that the guy was originally a Red Sox pick and now Theo has him back?

As a Cubs fan I love this week - dump Zambonehead and pickup Rizzo.

[phil:1xqfzr1p]320823745262[/phil:1xqfzr1p] - this seller is going to love that timing I think...

From MLBTradeRumors.com...

Baseball America ranked him 75 among MLB prospects entering the 2011 season and first among Padres prospects after the campaign ended. Even if he sticks in the Major Leagues from this point on, he'll be under team control through 2017.

Just spoke to Callis, who does the Cubs' top 30 list for BA.

Interestingly enough, he'd rank Rizzo as their #3 prospect, behind Jackson and Baez.

The Cubs have no idea if Cashner can be a starter, so trading him for a good first base prospect makes sense. Unfortunately, this means I am going to be selling a few nice Cashner cards I have and reallocating those funds towards a Rizzo auto and some other things.

Does that speak to how highly he thinks of those two, or what he thinks of Rizzo? For some reason I thought the Padres would be able to get more than a guy like Cashner for him.

Probably both. I just sent him a question for his next edition of "Ask BA" about this trade. We'll see if he prints it.

You can always tweet him - @jimcallisba.

Why not wait to see if Cashner has a decent season, and see if Rizzo gets a Cubs auto?

Well time to sell my lone Bowman Rizzo auto. Can someone shed some light on Cashner? Is he any good? Not too familiar with him.
