So, so sad the direction card companies have taken. The lack of effort is shameful. I see so many better custom creations on this board than what the card companies churn out. It is the Dark Ages of collecting right now - only period worse in the past century was the 1940's during the war years and paper rationing.

For what it 's worth, at least UD has themes with the groupings of autographs -- teams -- rather than that multi-player Ballpark Collection crap from Topps a few years back.

I actually like the basic look of that quad, and the quads can stand on their own I think design-wise without pics.

Obviously pics would be prefered, but it's the single and dual autos that are brutal...especially the player selection.

I counter that this is just not a baseball card. It's a glorified index card. If there are no team logos, no mention of the team name (just the city), and no image of anything on the card, then it's no longer a baseball card product in my opinion. At the very least, put a screened image of a ballpark in the background, or player silhouettes, or ANYTHING that has a baseball motif to it on the card. This is just the equivalent of an autograph album page, or a signed index card, but to me, NOT a baseball card.

I agree the player selection is for the most part poor with too many no-name prospects. But I could live with the player selection since it does include some HOF and all-star names, if the card design were better.

It's just my opinion, but UD and Leaf should just stay out of a sport all together if they can't get full licensing. Even more than I'm disappointed in UD, I'm fed up with MLB for their exclusive deal with Topps. It's strangling the hobby, inhibiting innovation, and championing mediocraty. I don't buy any new releases anymore because they all seem the same - same designs, same player selection, same inserts, etc. And I look at this issue and it's just the worst of everything rolled into one, and I cringe and despair for the hobby I love.

Those silver stickers suck.

So are you buying the Grace autos out of this product for your player baseball card collection?

The exclusive with Topps did not limit innovation, because Topps hasn't really been on the cusp of innovation for decades. As for Upper Deck, they made their own bed. It may be spinning when they look at the ceiling, but it's definitely their bed.

That said, you'll get your competition soon enough. Who knows, possibly 2013.

I really hope your statement about 2013 competition comes to realization.

That's the rub. Sometimes in player collecting, you'll buy the butt-ugly stuff because A) you're a completist, and B) it's a conversation piece and interesting for its badness. Equivalent to saying "Plan 9 From Outerspace" is awesome because it's so bad.

I definitely won't be going out of my way to add the Grace's out of this set. But if I see them go dirt cheap, I'll probably pick them up for their freak show appeal. If that makes me a hypocrite, so be it.

Sure the silver stickers aren't ideal, but still a much better design.

UD is capable of making nice multi-player autos as evidenced below. You really want to defend their efforts on this product? I think we all need to challenge them to do better.

A while back i sent Upper Deck a my resume for an open accounting position they had. Yesterday sent them an email telling them I saw the images of SP Baseball and kindly asked they pull my resume from their files and dispose of it.

Chris Carlin emails me to say my request has been forwarded to HR.

Don't need the stink of their company to tarnish my good name.

I am confused about the MLBPA exclusive with Topps?
Isn't this the same situation that lasted from 1952-1980? The Topps monopoly?
This was brough to court and in the end, Fleer and Donruss were granted licenses for 1981 releases?
How is this any different?
