It is crazy. The last three 9.5 Refractor autos have hit $800 or higher. I am sitting on one that I bought for around $60 back in 2009 and am stupid not to list it. But I typically don't sell much. The exceptions are super hot cards of guys that I feel are bound to come back to earth and/or crash & burn, novelty items or low numbered cards where the money value far exceeds the value for me to have in my collection.

But Trout has a really good chance to be the best player in the game for a long time and, while I don't think those prices will hold, I do think his better cards will retain a good chunk of their value. I want the card in my collection so the question for me is should I just sell now and hope to rebuy it down the road for something less. That is really a rhetorical question because I know the smart answer is yes. For me though, I don't know if the hassle of listing and rebuying and not having it in my collection for a time period is worth a few hundred bucks that I'll just blow on something else.

His cards are going bonkers right now so not really a fluke.
So I spent 2 hours yesterday going thru boxes of cards pulling Trout base/low end inserts to post on ebay.

I have a 2009 Sterling Auto BGS 9.5 that has been in my safe deposit box at a bank for quite a while. If I have the chance to get to it after work today, I will probably take it out and list it... may do the same with my 2009 Bowman Chrome Billy Hamilton X-Fractor. Combined, those two cards may just pay for about 1/2 of my case of Bowman Chrome that I will get.

Just curious, why would you have it in a safe deposit box? Its not priceless.

Crazy to think it was supposed to be Harper at those prices, not Trout

My Homeowner's Insurance will not cover my card collection, so I keep all my cards that have a BV of $25+ in a safe deposit box, unless I am planning to list them on E-Bay in the near future. Usually try to go to the box about once a month just to flip through all of them and enjoy them, as well as adding new cards to it and taking some out either to sell or that have fallen back below the $25 value. So I do it just in case I get robbed or the townhouse catches on fire, so I don't lose any of the bigger value items of my collection.

Wow Really Steve.....

With my HOI all I had to do was make a list and take some pictures.....And it helps to have a few receipts of what I paid for them......and BAM I'm covered.
but I have documentation of said valued stuff. Now granted not everything is going to be covered but some of it can be for sure.

Trout stuff is crazy now. I sold my ungraded 2009 Bowman Chrome DP Trout Auto for $340 last week...$100 more than I expected.

Well, I guess I should clarify some... they won't cover it at a price I find reasonable and affordable... I save a lot of money and hassle by just paying $110/year for a large safe deposit box, where I keep other things too, like deed to the townhouse, birth certificates, social security cards, passports, marriage license, parents' living wills, etc... So, why pay $60/year for a small one when I can pay $50 more for one 3X that size and be assured that nothing will ever happen to my cards in there. Part of the issue is that, living in Florida, the humidity can be very high, which is not good for the cards. My parents' insurance company specifically would not cover them because of potential damage by humidity. Keeping them in a safe deposit box also keeps them out of humidity 100% of the time. Oh, and I do keep a list of all the cards I have in there.

Do you have a basement? If yes then why not just buy a fire/water proof safe?

State Farm flat out told me not to cover my collection with them because their rates are too high. They're just not set up to handle collections. I use Collectibles Insurance Services and it is much cheaper. Not cheap, just cheaper - but worth the piece of mind.

This is crazy prices, here I thought getting $340+ for a refractor a month ago was a steal, now to hear 9.5's are getting that much makes me sick to my stomach. I wish I had my stash back, but then again a good profit is a good profit. I can count on each finger and toe how many times I held onto cards too long, ha ha.

I'm trying to figure out who the hell these people are who have $500 to drop on a base chrome auto!? That's not just chump change..

At this point it's almost worth going and buying a bunch of wax to try to pull a base card of him.

Honestly, I think this is going well beyond hype here. I really think that many think he could be the next 'Pujols' and his chrome RC cards (not to mention all RC cards) could see similar pricing in time.

EDIT: Just to say that I am not disagreeing with his star potential, but rather just to say that I do not think too many are buying in at these prices for a short term flip.
