I think this is BS after he saw what Rivera got. He knew this would happen.

I just think with last contract negotiations in '10 things could have gotten messy. The last few years his position was in question losing range etc. He always said he wanted to retire a SS. A season on bench last year probably was a real wake up call that he is breaking down and getting older. We probably can go back and forth, we may never know. This is just my opinion. I almost didn't comment at all because this can always turn into a pissing contest.

The Jeter thing is mostly a tip of the cap to a damn good MLB player - why are people so uptight about it?

I get why he is retiring, but you think the tour is less of a distraction than people asking him if he is retiring?

A week ago I would have said no but now I watch every game and every post game show and reporters keep asking the same questions. How do you feel about your last this, your last that etc. Being in New York there is no escaping this and sometimes you can't dodge these distractions but to stick with the OP my view with the "Farewell Tour " is in my opinion something he did not ask for. It is the teams themselves to make the decision to honor his achievements. Distractions of contracts and position changes I would think hit harder personally more than this "Tour".

The short explanation is why does Jeter deserve this and XXXXXX didn't? Just to toss out some names that come to my mind Nolan Ryan, Pudge, Junior.

I think for someone who has done his part in trying to keep the game pure, I say not send him off with a bang? The man has put 20 yrs in, never asked for anything in return...so why not?

Ryan was hurt for much of his final season with hip and knee injuries and did not travel much with the team that season. When he did travel, teams presented him with gifts before games. Ryan said he didn't want any hoopla over his retirement.

Griffey unexpectantly retired in the middle of the season. He just walked away and specifically said he wanted no farewell tour.

I was just referring to talent. Hasn't Jeter said he doesn't want to make a big deal of it also? I think all players should retire at the end of the season (or middle if they want to just walk away). The announcement should be made only with time for them to be honored by the home fans.

I'm in denial. I hope he bats 300, stays healthy and comes back next year.

Cheering for the Brett Favre type of retirement eh?

All "if's" aside.......

He's a legend like it or not. He played the elite position for the elite professional American sports team for his entire career. He's nice guy, he's good looking, he's been a very good baseball player that played clean through a tough time in the MLB. He's beloved by baseball fans, as was Mo. That's why he's getting a farewell tour.

I also do not see this becoming common. It's happened twice in two years (with the same club) so people are getting uptight but honestly there won't be another one for a bit

I like it.

He deserves it.

Model citizen of the game since 1996.

Someone mentioned Pujols earlier.

I honestly don't see him even getting one of these.

It doesn't seem like he is universally loved and respected like Jeter, Chipper and Mo.

agree Top, besides Rivera who else had a farewell tour besides Gwynn and Ripken.

I don't remember Gwynn or Ripken getting a farewell tour. I remember the special recognition during the All-Star Game.

I don't even think Griffey Jr. had a farewell tour (I can't seem to remember a big hoopla by the other clubs with gifts and such when he came to town in his final season).

For Jeets and other players in the future, I'm fine with recognition at the ASG and if the yankees (or whatever is the club of other players) want to make their 82-game home schedule promotions for that player (yankees have jeter giveaways or honors each game, for instance), but I think it's getting to be overkill to have other clubs, especially rivals, doing farewell tour activities with pregame gift ceremonies and so on.

I would much rather have a family, which he does not have, yet at least. (In response to a couple statements above)

This is what I respect Jeter the most for. I think him not having a family yet is a smart decision by choice.

I think when he retires, he will settle down because his yearly income will be less and thus some woman who divorces him won't get as much of his assets as she would had they gotten married while he was an active player.

its good for baseball, it helps put people in the seats.

there's been quite a few empty seats at Jeter's games in the first week or so. Only the Astros and Blue Jays home openers were sellouts. Jeets couldn't even sell out Yankee Stadium on the last Yankee Stadium home opener of his career.

Is there really a question of Derek Jeters place in history?

As a phillies fans, my DNA is to hate everything NY and the exception to that rule has always been Derek Jeter. He is among the very best shortstops to ever play the game and unless you have numbers that refute that, it really just comes off as sour grapes. Jeter is among the all time greats and there isnt much doubt to that.
