And Olbermann just nit picks just to help. Get ratings - as anyone would do

He picks fights with WFAN radio broadcasters to help stir up publicity
It's all a means to an end

I don't particular care for his bits but that's my taste

I don't blame him for doing that piece bc it grabs people's attention - which means he was 100% successful as were talking about him and his bit

What percentage of Yankee players never get a ring?

If you look at an All Time Rings/Player list (ex. Berra-10)....

Only 1 player in the Top 40 never played for the Yankees. ONE...Eddie Collins.

The numerical odds state that if you play for a historically great franchise you will likely fall into a couple championships. It's not a Yankee phenomenon. It's a sports phenomenon.

NBA Championships have been controlled (5 or more titles) by four teams! The Bulls, Spurs, Celtics, and Lakers account for 44 titles. The rest of the league, 24.

Jeter is without a doubt a great first ballot HOFer but the mythology that goes along with his career is just too much. He was very fortunate to be drafted by the Yankees, and not the Royals. He was given a single digit number (practically announcing his Mt. Olympus status). He played on some of the greatest teams in history.

I don't discount what he's done, I'm simply taking the worshiping out of my analysis.

Funny. I don't see you touting players who compare well to Jeter, like Biggio and Larkin, as better than they were because they played for smaller market teams that weren't set up for numerous Championships.

I'm on the record in several places stating that Larkin is extremely underrated.

He's also a childhood idol. So I'm biased.

I always disliked Biggio because "The Killer B's" was a dumb nickname. So I'm petty.

I'm not sure what your point is.

Secondly, I've always felt that titles are a little overrated when we are comparing legacies. As I stated in a previous post, luck of who you play for is a big part of your legacy.

LeBron James isn't any less of a generational talent because he has lost in a couple of Finals.

Is Jim Kelly really a different QB because Norwood couldn't nail a FG?

Babe Ruth isn't transcendent because of his titles, it's because he's flipping Ruth.

In my opinion this title worshiping is a fairly recent phenomenon that is driven by sports talk radio. It just doesn't matter that much to me. You're either legendary or you're not.

I'm obviously nitpicking but the Captain refused to:

Move positions when NY acquired AROD in his prime.

Move down the order....period.

At 37 he had a chance to resign and give the Yankees a great break in order to build their roster. He stubbornly pushed for a deal to be the highest paid SS in MLB....and he got it. At 37!

And at 38 he batted .316 with over 200 hits.

Yeah but the dude lead MLB with 216 hits and batted .316 at 38 years old! Not too shabby. Not a Yankee fan, but Like many have said he was GREAT for baseball in a time where many big names fell from grace. Oh and Olbermann just a sorry washed up TV guy trying to get rating which is impossible for him since he was on MSNBC.

after signing that deal the first season was a 216 hit season yeah silly him.

Did Giradi say he refused??

It was Jeters team and Arod knew it before he was traded here. Arod was a good third baseman whereas Jeter would not have been.

Yes it has everything to do with it. Jeter was the driving force behind those championship teams not a role player like a robert Horry type guy. Take ewing Barkley Banks and guys liek that. They will always considered great but just couldnt bring their teams over the hump.

Hey guys, how many hits did Jeter have in 2012?

His WinsAboveAverage for 2012 was -.3! He was less than average yet took the highest amount of money in baseball at the most premium defensive position.

Tulo's? +4.2 in 2011. The supposed standard at the time of Jeter's new deal.

Not once have I ever heard the titles argument when talking greatest player of all time in baseball. Not once.

Basketball? Yes.
Football? Yes, ONLY for QBs.
Hockey? Never.

Ted Williams-possibly greatest post-Ruthian player of all-time...no title.

Ty Cobb-at the time of induction, he, not Ruth was considered the greatest to ever play....no title.

In terms of baseball legacy, titles mean little to nothing.

Anyone who needs to "sold" on why Derek Jeter is one the best Yankees/players ever, either doesn't know much about baseball or hasn't been paying attention to baseball very much for the last 20 years. It is quite hilarious, given the NUMEROUS awards, Championships, all-time GREAT regular season stats, all-time LEGENDARY Playoff stats, GREAT off-the-field track record, likeability, charity work, longevity, etc... that anyone would waste their time disparaging Jeter. I can understand seeing it from the legion of ignorant facebookers who can't enjoy anything in life other than their own selfish nonsense, but people who frequent sports talk sites should know better. Again, all I see from these people is lines of derp. It makes them look REALLY stupid/unintelligent/uninformed/ignorant/etc... which is their right, for sure. But don't expect to not be laughed at.

back on topic, Keith Olbermann is a talented television man. He's agile with words. ... Still. If you are a TV executive who hires this man, you are a ******* idiot.

Titles are team accomplishments, especially in baseball. No one player can win a title. It takes a team. In basketball a guy can take over the game. In Football a QB can carry a team (unless WRs drop the ball). In baseball the only position that can be remotely argued to carrying a team is a starting pitcher if he can win three games in the WS. Definitely not a singles hitting SS. It takes a full team to win the series, and Jeter was on the richest team in baseball when there was a significant drop off to the next tier and his TEAM won 4 titles. Then he got another when Arod and Tex dominated (if I recall correctly) on another great team. Jeter is a great player. He is equal to Biggio in my book, just played on better teams.

Really? You choose one inane stat from that season? I would still take the 216 hits and 15 HR's (for a guy that doesn't hit HR's) from that season any day.

Come on.....let go of the hate, it's ok. You'll feel better.

And Tulo almost actually played a full season that year.
