So I bought 2 boxes of 87 Topps to let my son help me rip cuz he likes opening packs. (he's 3 1/2). 1 box down, and i noticed something cool early as a Clemens collector.
I got a Clemens card that was the victim of "the gum". But, rather than take it off, I stopped and left it that way. I didnt HAVE a Clemens card with the pack gum still stuck to it. So now I do!
Also saved some other examples of Stars/RCs that were the gum victims too for fun.

Now its almost like I need to keep ripping to find the Clemens All Star an RB cards with "the gum".......

Worthless and silly I know......

A few years ago I bought a boatload of 1992 UD to try to snag the Ted Williams auto. . . . needless to say I think I'd have a better chance of finding Ted's head in a jar.

I bought that UD stuff too once., 4 boxes. No chance of the auto. REALLY make syou aware of how overproduced it all was.
For instance, 92 Fleer Ultra CLemens auto, 2,000 made, Inserted 1 per 35,000 packs.
so thats 70 MILLION packs.
17 cards per pack.
1.19 BILLION cards made.
600 cards in the set.
Assuming even printing of cards, 1.983 MILLION of every 1992 Fleer Ultra card.
Can only assume that or WORSE for everything around that time.

getting an auto #'d to 2,000 out of 1.19 BILLION cards......unlikely.

All that comes to mind of my mathematically bad cardboard gambles:

Worthless and silly, yes. But awesome too.

@BBCgalaxee - A gum stained set? Now that's perverse!

If anyone has a gum stained Robbie Alomar, or better yet one with the frickin' gum stuck to it, lemme know :)

I don't think that card was in those cases. The chase card is the Frank Thomas card with his name not printed on the front of his card.
I believe you are correct. There are two different types and it has to do with gloss. I read an article that is probably not that hard to find if googled. I recall Bush was given the cards by Topps so that he could do with them as he pleased. If you were tight with the W, you might have gotten one as a gift! It's possible a few somehow were packed out, but that could also be urban legend.

I've got a friend who was working on a set of 1987 Topps wax stained cards. Found a couple
of hundred at a shop in Charleston, SC. Gave them to my friend and he pulled about 50 for
his set. Still missing 100+/-.

Weird for sure, but whatever works for someone to enjoy the cards. I couldn't imagine logging in time and effort to build a set like that and have to buy singles. i never got rid of gum/wax stained cards, but they were held in low regard. I'm sure I have 1000s of them tucked away in my boxes.
