Figured I’d start a new thread for a new month.

He may not be in the HOF but I’ve enjoyed watching him play when I was a kid. It’s a shame the auto only graded a 9 (I believe due to the faded ink streaks), but overall, I’m happy with how this came out. CSG is definitely tough, especially with the Topps Chrome Black cards.

This one isn’t very exciting, but it is an important part of my vintage Topps HOF pitcher project.

All 30 representing all 30 years from 1952-1981 with no omissions, no duplicates, and no rookies.

Almost a quarter of the way complete.

1978 Catfish Hunter #460
PSA 9
His 14th of 15 base Topps cards

Why his ‘78?
Truth be told, Hunter’s ‘78 was a victim of the logistics required to assemble this run. I originally wanted to feature him in his prime as an Athletic during his Cy Young winning season of ‘74. However, I ultimately settled on someone else. This will be one of the few players shown at or near the end of his career.

Nonetheless, Hunter’s penultimate card in ‘78 shows him in the twilight of his career as a member of the World Champion Yankees. He even won the Series clincher in ‘78 over my beloved Dodgers as he battled newly diagnosed diabetes.

Been looking forward to this day for a while now. Never thought I would own this card but here it is. David Ortiz 2003 Topps Traded RedSox Rookie uncirculated Xfractor Ser #/24. These were inserted as box toppers in HTA boxes. 2003 was the first year Topps Chrome made Xfractors. Glad I was finally able to finish the full parallel set!

More low hanging fruit, but no less important to my goal of getting a different HOF pitcher Topps card from 1952-81. No rookies.

Card 8 of 30

1980 Bruce Sutter #17
PSA 9
His 4th of 13 base Topps cards

Runner-up choice for 1980:
Nolan Ryan
Runner-up choice for Sutter: 1978

Why his ‘80? One of the baseball’s elite closers by 1980, this is his first “action” card, and shows him coming off his Cy Young winning ‘79 campaign…the 3rd reliever ever to do so. This would be his last year as a Cub, but donning Cardinal red did not hinder his dominance.

An all-football entry, sorry.

2021 Illusions Trophy Collection Super Bowl Lamar Jackson/Trent Dilfer 1/1. Had to get it to match with my 2018 1/1 Jackson/Dilfer from the same set, which I got before Jackson blew up for $50 because it's heavily creased. Still probably worth a bit more than $50 now. And another 2021 Mosaic variation, that's 6 so far with several more incoming.

Rare non-Dodger items. I am pretty sure that these remind me of 1978 Topps, with the team script. I like the design a lot. I needed a certified Walker and the Altuve went cheaper than I expected, so i won it too. Nice, semi-inexpensive way to get some decent on card autographs. That design would make a nice base set.

Still a great card of Catfish. I know that 74 you speak of, another great action shot. He had a lot of posed cards, so these 2 stand out for me.

Another 2021 Mosaic Dilfer variation, this one is 08/11, uniform number! Missed out on one of the three 1/1's today, it sold for quite a bit more than I feel like paying for cards like this and more than the normal going rate...I guess a couple of people really wanted to go after this rainbow. No biggie, 1/1's are like the cherry on top. I'd only be upset about missing one if it was an older card from his playing career I really wanted.

Also have a James Kaprielian Gold Refractor RC 24/50 out of Ginter Chrome. Trying to fill some of my old Topps Silk needs so I grabbed this 2012 Jonny Gomes. Mason Miller is just a base auto I hadn't picked up yet and the Zito is a minor league team set card I still needed. The Junior Ortiz gets my 1988 Topps signed set needs down to 28...have a couple more incoming, one not very exciting but the other is a big one.

Do you have an online photo gallery of the signed 88 set? Would LOVE to look at it.
