Some more from COMC:

041322-1.jpg
I already had a Hinch Topps Tek Diffractor (different pattern) but I couldn't resist buying another when I saw it pop up for a decent price. The Spiezio 1997 Bowman Black Ink auto drops my needs for that set to 2...I also need 2 from the Gold Ink set. The sweet Tejada patch out of 2002 Fleer Platinum is hand numbered 54/55. And the Giambi Red parallel from 2003 Tribute Contemporary Collection is 32/50.

041322-2.jpg
A bunch of recent retro-themed autographs, though it makes me feel pretty old if 2002 is retro now. Zito is 005/199 and Tenace is 109/150.

041322-3.jpg
A couple of recent GU with retro designs, the Semien patch is 19/25. The Rickey Tools of the Trade is 150/150, neat. Nice to grab the Nomah Black Mini out of 2009 O-Pee-Chee, those are fairly tough.

Some other player or team collectors might know how tough many of the cards from 2005 Upper Deck Flyball are...several of them popped up on COMC a while back and I grabbed an Octavio Dotel, which I thought was the last one I needed for my team set. But this Zito was also listed and the card didn't look familiar to me so I dug through my Zitos and saw that I didn't have it. I use Beckett to make my wantlists and it turns out for some reason they did not list this card. It's number 102 and their set listing skips right from 101 to 103. So I never knew I needed it until I saw it and it felt unfamiliar. I don't know if it's super rare or anything but I'm glad I found it! It seems like Beckett skipped 25 numbers when cataloguing this set so I wonder if I'm missing any more A's without realizing it. Baseballcardpedia and tcdb are also missing the Zito from their checklist.

How long did you have to wait to receive for your COMC order?
This was for economy shipping, I requested the shipment March 22 and they state it was shipped April 8, however it was in "a shipping label has been created" limbo for a few days and was actually shipped April 11. I got it April 12 since I live literally 15 minutes from where they shipped it from, ha. 20 days for economy is acceptable to me, it's a little slower than they were pre-pandemic but not way off.

Let's take a break from the COMC haul to look at some other stuff I got in the mail today:

041422.jpg
I got lucky with the Century Marks Grieve, the seller titled it "Mullennium Marks" which is wrong on multiple levels. The 1997 Collector's Choice New Frontier was another McGwire insert I wanted to pick up this year...I still need Canseco from the set, though. Jason Hart was the last card I needed for my 2000 Bowman Chrome Retro/Future team set, it was a lot tougher to find than you'd think. Ryan Christenson drops my 1999 Pacific Crown Collection Platinum Blue needs down to one...Rickey Henderson. And the 2003 Donruss Champions Metalized 067/100 Reggie and 2003 Leaf Red Press Proof Rickey (he's pictured as an A on the backside) drop those respective set needs down to one. I'm missing David Justice for both sets. It's almost like there's somebody hoarding his cards.......

Okay here's the rest of my favorites from the big shipment a few days ago, so I can get back to posting cards as they come in.

041522-1.jpg
Thrilled to find a 1999 Ultimate Victory parallel 007/100 Grieve, pretty popular set. Also a 2020 Topps Update Black McGwire 33/69. And two Ultra Platinum Medallions...my Platinum pickups are pretty few and far between, but I'm making progress little by little.

041522-2.jpg
1999 UD Ionix Reciprocal Rickey Henderson completes the team set, always good to get a numbered '90s Rickey. The Rated Rookies Medalist Grieve goes with the Tejada I picked up a little while ago to finish my needs for that set. And six new 1999 Pacific Platinum Blues get me within 4 of completing that team set.

041522-3.jpg
Six 2003 UD 40-Man Rainbows/40, and I'm still a ways off from completing this one.

041522-4.jpg
2000 Ultimate Victory parallel 011/100 gets me within one of completing the team set...just missing the Zito RC, which never pops up. Piatt puts me two away from finishing 2000 Gold label Gold/100...missing the other two Piatt cards, oddly. 2003 Topps Chrome X-Fractor Keith Foulke 28/57 missing the uncirculated case, still need 4 from that set. And some other cool ones.

041522-5.jpg
2011 Topps Heritage Chrome Black Refractor Kurt Suzuki 52/62. As well as some other tougher A's parallels...still missing quite a few for 2013 Topps Sapphire/25 but I'm within 2 for 2018 Topps Black and 4 for 2019 Topps Black.

041522-6.jpg
2021 Finest Flashbacks Refractor Matt Chapman, 2021 Stadium Club Chrome Refractor Rickey Henderson, 2020 Topps Heritage Chrome Refractor Matt Olson, and 2020 Topps '85 Autograph Badonkadonk Sean Murphy.

Back to a more normal mailday (actually Friday and Saturday's mail)

041622.jpg
2005 Finest Gold Refractor Rich Harden 09/49, still need a few to finish up that team set. 2006 UD Epic Swatch Eric Chavez 34/50 because I'm a sucker for jumbo swatches from the '00s. 2002 Fleer Focus Century Parallel David Justice 058/123. 2006 Upper Deck Gold Bobby Crosby 266/299, still trying to track down the last couple I need for that team set. 2018 Topps Heritage Real Ones auto Khris Davis. And a 2020 Bowman Chrome Draft Refractor Tyler Soderstrom. I only need a couple of Robert Puasons to finish up my 2020 Bowman Chrome non-auto Refractor needs, waiting for his stuff to drop since they are way overpriced right now compared to his actual prospect status.

Not a high value card but man, has it been hard to find.

Costs me more than I thought it would, but glad to have it.

I didn't see any for months after Finest was released but then BAM! three or four listed this past month.

Gorgeous looking in person...

1999 UD Choice Prime Choice Reserve Ben Grieve 036/100 from the 'Cover Glory' subset...goes nice with the regular Grieve I got earlier this year. Somebody from a Facebook group was nice enough to send this to me, so I sent them some stuff as well. Still need three to complete this small team set. Also a 2001 Ultra Gold Medallion Tom Goodwin 48/50, pretty big pickup because there aren't a whole lot of Goodwins left that I need. He's a holdover from the days when my collecting focus was Fresno State alumni...that's where my Trent Dilfer collecting comes from.

042122-2.jpg
Two Matt Chapmans from the 2021 Bowman Sterling 'Recollections' set. The Gold is 08/50 and the regular one is 53/99. They sucker me in with the retro design even if 'retro' is 2014 in this case. Lastly a 2020 Topps Black Marcus Semien 62/69.

COMC order arrived…190 cards. Less than 1 month from shipment request to delivery using economy shipping.

Got some 1993 Finest to finish off the set, 28 years in the making. 😁😁 Such a beautiful set!

(also added the corrected Sal Fasano to my 1996 Select Certified set…also a sharp looking set)

Quite a few low-end Thomas cards with a few gems mixed in! About 2 years worth of purchases in total.

My 2nd show in recent time (1-2 years). A good way to kill a little time with my wife and son off at work and nothing else really to do that can't wait. It is a small show, same one i went to last time for my first one in a decade or more. There is a better show coming up in June. We'll see if I remember. That one is the local collector group show and tends to have much better stuff, at least back when I went in the past.

I scrounged up exactly 140 cards today. It was strictly a bargain hunt. I am not sure I would really go after higher end cards at a show anymore. I have to assume I'd find them cheaper online, but a way to get a nice selection of bulk cards w/o going poor paying shipping, you can't beat a shop or show for that. I guess if i saw a double or triple digit card that I really had to have and at a good price, I'd grab it, but I really only scan most cases. Most are filled with stuff I just don't care about. Oddball is almost non-existent at a show like this. 80% or more newer stuff from the last 5 years.

I spent $30. Technically, it should have been $38, but a guy who I recognized from way back essentially gave me the stuff I picked out from his table. He asked me for a buck as a token payment, where what I had was priced at $8. I only bought from 3 tables. $1 ($8 value), $9 and $20. No card was priced more than $1, most were 25 cents or less. here is my haul:

This first scan includes 9 autographs I bought for $1 each. Nothing amazing here, all were Dodgers at some point. That was the $9 table. The 76T Wilbur Wood is signed with a ballpoint. That was listed at $3. The remaining 24 cards were from his quarter box. This was the guy that gave me the stack for a buck, so $10 spent at 2 tables in this picture.

IMG_2066.jpg

The last 3 pictures are of the 5/$1 boxes at the last table. I pulled 106 cards and he let me have them for $20. Quite a bit of low end 90s inserts, some newer Dodger inserts and just some cards that caught my eye. Remember, I don't open packs or really do much buying at stores or shows anymore, so this was a huge (quantity) pick up for me.

IMG_2067.jpgIMG_2068.jpg
IMG_2069.jpg

Oddly enough, I did manage to scrape up 3 FB cards. I don't hate other sports and will certainly pick up items I like, but i just didn't see anything. The Emmitt Smith was some sort of Pacific insert. The Todd Christenson was one of those Topps rack pack glossy inserts from 84/85 and the last one is a card of Tim Rossovich. Some of you may recognize the name, as his brother was an actor (Top Gun fame) and Tim did a little bit of acting himself. I mostly remember Tim as a bad guy goon character from a movie called "Looker", a weird early 80s thriller with James Coburn.

One last thought. I found it refreshing that, although I was in the shallow end of the pool so to speak (not very risky to buy 25 cent cards), I could pick out cards that I like with no regard for book value or worth. Each one was clearly worth the price I paid. I may have "overpaid" for some and there may even be a hidden gem or two in there that I scored a nice deal on. I just like scanning through new (to me) cards. It's also funny how stingy I can get when deciding if I want to add another 20 cent card to the pile! I brought $100 cash, so I think I did OK and still came home with the majority of my money. The show continues tomorrow and the wife works again, but not likely that I'll go back for day 2.

Just one in the mail today but it's an awesome one. A member of one of the 90s Insert Facebook groups reached out because he knew I needed this to finish my set. A SASE later and he had it in my hands in no time and refused to let me pay him for it.
