Yah, I'd like to have that mirror gold version. I've never even seen a picture of one though. And if one ever becomes available, I'm not sure I'll have the cash. We'll see!
One was right under your nose all the time.

Well not really. Since this is the "Roberto Alomar Collector's Thread", I was probably referring to the 1998 Pinnacle Plus Team Pinnacle Mirror Gold card with Roberto Alomar on it. Which I have never seen a picture of.

Now for something that NOBODY cares about. Except for me, and all you other degenerates that obsess over 90's variations and miscellany.

1992 Dad's Kid Tri Cards!

There are articles about how all this went down online if you're interested. But basically some dude decided to buy up a billion junk wax commons, cut them up, and then glue them in top of each other with little foam bits in between to create a "3-D" look. Then stick that assemblage on top of an uncut card, and glue that Monstro ElisaSue onto an orange plastic rectangle, and sell it as some sort of collectible. And then that dude got sued out of existence by the MLB licensing entities that had never granted him a license to crease these things in the first place.

In retrospect, the early 90's really were the wild west of card collecting. With all those "magazines" which were really just packs of cards in disguise, and Don West hucking "limited" cards with print runs of 10,000, and stuff like the Tri-Cards, it really was crazy.

Crazy, man, crazy.

But back to these "cards". Alomar was featured in the Tri Cards run, in the form of his hideously ugly 1991 Donruss base issue. But there were actually two variations: the pack-issued card, and the factory set issue. So here you go.

And now for a modern issue, from 2017 Topps. I found this one for $25, and even though I've never really lusted after this card, it's a good looking issue. And it's an on-card auto numbered to /3. So what the hell, right?

The thing about this one that bugs me is the back. It just consists of boilerplate text, plus this "Congratulations! You have received a blah blah blah". You don't say?

Turns out, I'm fully aware that I just received a Topps Salute Autograph Card from 2017 Topps Baseball Series Two.

This is quite the special and magical card, as it has many secrets to be uncovered....

The savant team of D2R, Cardcop, and myself got together over the weekend to do some research, and our findings may shock you. It was no easy task, at one point D2R's morphine/ketamine/Dairy Queen ratios were so skewed we had to inject a dilly bar right into his spinal cord.

The first thing we noticed was 1/3.... coincidence? I think not. That fraction turns out to be .333 which is exactly what Alomar hit in 1997. The card is from 2017 which means the gap between 97 and 17 is 20 years.... coincidence? I think not. We can clearly see Alomar hit 20 hr in 2001. In 2001 the world trade towers were destroyed. Coincidence? I think not. We can see that if you reverse 1/3 to 3-1 you could get 2. Coincidence? I think not. That's the number of planes that went into the buildings. Then Cardcop found the biggest clue of them all right after giving D2R a Backyard Bacon Ranch Stackburger(tm) suppository... "why is this guy wearing a blue helmet??" I was stunned. Clearly he used it to survive the rubble falling on his head.

Banjar noticed the strangeness of the back and we agree, usually its "congrats blah blah" and then the CEO of Topps signs his name, but its suspiciously missing. I shouldn't need to say who did 9/11 now, they tried to pin it on the fall guy Alomar where the real culprit didn't want to put his DNA on the back of the card... too late buddy.

The only part of the mystery left unsolved is what the heck is penned on the front of the card. Rob@limajee'12. No clue what that means.

Holy cow. It's been a while since we were treated to an official Haste-style research project here on good ol' FCB! You really did your homework here, and made some mind blowing connections that can no longer be ignored. I mean, you need to part of RFK Jr's staff, immediately!

PS: Alomar's signature really is a mess. I've never been able to make heads or tails of it, except for the occasional readable R.

In my post about the 1999 Revolution Premiere Date I mentioned I had another Pacific parallel on the way. Of course everyone on FCB was just beside themselves with anticipation to see what it could be. At least that's how I imagined it.

Well, wait no longer. Behold the 2000 Pacific Omega Gold!

It was a retail-only parallel, which helps explain why it took so long to find, despite the print run of 120. To say I'm chuffed would be an understatement. I also threw in scans of the other cards involved in this run, which is now complete.:)

When going into it I thought I would have an easier time linking up the story, I guessed he had 9 gold gloves and 11 all-star games but it was 10/12. (Very impressive)

As far as RFK goes I think D2R might snipe that position from me due to having more hot beef (tallow) ****** injections. Idk what's going on these days, dudes who think fast food is all of a sudden healthy if you add tallow belongs in Idiocracy 2. Maybe I could instead do Dept. of Transportation and make a monorail connecting Ogdenville to North Haverbrook. Or perhaps a giant slingshot with a big balloon castle to pad the landing on the other side.

The best auto I've seen in person is Brian Bannister. Amazing.

The PC gods have been kind to me lately. Here's the last of the runs I was able to complete over the last few weeks, 2003 DLP Player Collection. This was a "set" that was inserted into packs of other issues, kind of like 1998 Crusade. But this time they stamped each card with the logo of the set it was packed out with.

Love your runs lately 😎

Make sure to locate a SAMPLE card as well to complete the master run
He's got one I'm aware of ( Studio version)

See an example below.

Thanks!

I did not know those samles existed. Looking on ebay right now there are also samples from others besides the Studio versions. Oddly enough there's zero info about them online, even though other DLP samples from the same era are pretty well documented. Guess I'll just have to keep my eyes open!

I will reprint for you my post from years ago discussing them. I had enough background to satisfy the Beckett folks and they slabbed some for me along with a bunch of rare Sportsflix and Fleer stuff that made @autocut and a few others happy back then.

" Thanks to @Jastermeel hooking me up with Chuck (Juliana's) current info. I now have better info from people FIRST HAND as opposed to the 2nd hand knowledge I've been understanding for years. Here's Chuck's explanation of the MLB sample situation from many DLP items

The person the cards originated from is "supposedly" a former employee of MLB Properties who received / had access to the samples . They were sent direct from DLP to MLB to show samples of each item / insert. This person was in sort of a "curator" role Chuck called it. We (@Jastermeel and myself) are not sure whether or not the employee received them as a retirement gift or not , as Chucks not sure either

When this person decided to retire they wanted to sell their vintage items and these samples , and went thru Joe Esposito, who in turn contacted Chuck. Chuck purchased some of the collection, and then Eddie Silard (a big time CT dealer) purchased the other half

Now-- some of the samples were stamped-- some were not, and there were many items meant for series which were never publicly released, but were presented as possible releases. Meaning some samples exist which are unique items for series which never saw the light of day ( which I'm sure makes @autocut happy

Until such time as I can talk to Joe & Eddie thats the most current info I have "

Ah OK. So these were never really distributed like most of the other issues from that era with "SAMPLE" on the back. They were circulated internally, kind of like those "executive proofs" numbered with X's (XX/50). Thanks!

So one of my 2025 collecting goals was to land one White Whale. As it is ever year. Some years hit, some years miss. But this year...it's a hit baby! I'll post it as soon as it arrives.

Stay tuned for some 90's parallel pumpitude!

Ja, you girly men are not pumped enough to handle the massive biceps involved in this manly acquisition. That's right. You would rather lay there eating your girly pastries, swinging in your back flab that you stretched out to make a flab hammock!

Ja girlies! Hear me now and believe me later! Get out of your flab hammocks and acknowledge ze pumpitude!

Steven Seagal has some work to do to recognize, you know. He has become so flabby and untalented and lame in his old age.
