Three new A's debuts since ther last update, I already had an autograph for one of them and the other two are on the way. In addition to JJ below, relievers Rico Garcia and Spencer Patton were called up.
JJ Bleday - Former top prospect is playing like a current top prospect so far...he's 7 for...
The big one for today, a 2019 Illusions Superlatives Purple Autograph 1/1 Trent Dilfer.
Some recent not as exciting stuff...2022 Update Home Field Advantage Sean Murphy, 2022 Finest Green Refractor Autograph Mark Mulder 22/99, and a 2023 Topps Big League Opening Act Autograph Ken Waldichuk.
Got a couple of nice additions to my collection today:
Swisher is a 2005 Ultra Platinum Medallion 20/50. The 1997 Finest Embossed Refractor McGwire was an anniversary gift from my wonderful wife. I already had a Giambi from this set, still need a Canseco to finish off the Silver A's...
They did in prior years but when I remembered this set a while back and went to the Topps site to buy one, the A's (and several other teams) were "sold out" while many teams were still available for sale.
They limited the A's set to 267! That wouldn't usually be an issue because only 93(!) 2022 sets were ordered and the print runs each year generally run in the 100-150 range, but with the first A's card of a Japanese player of course they were going to sell a lot more.
Nice stuff. I missed out on an A's Topps Now Road to Opening Day set this year because they limited production and the set sold out before I realized they were on sale. Likely people wanting the Shintaro Fujinami card...maybe they'll dump the rest of the set and I can pick it up.
Yeah he's not a top prospect for sure, just one of those guys with some bright spots and major flaws that you hope could be ironed out. I'd be very satisfied if he just turned into an okay reliever.
Three more debuts since my last post:
Sam Long - Picked up because at this point the A's are trying to do anything (that doesn't cost money) to shore up the overworked bullpen.
Luis Medina - Prospect got called up for one start and was shelled then sent back down. Hard to blame him since it...
Been pretty busy this month so the pickups have slowed.
2022 Donruss Retro '88 Gold Auto 07/10 Miguel Tejada - reminds me of the jack-o-lantern 1988 Donruss Baseball's Best set so I had to grab it. The colors aren't exact but it definitely makes you think of that set. Also a 2001 Topps...
Oh that's great, I hadn't seen that it was confirmed they are keeping the name. Though I'm not sure how many decades it will take to suppress an eye roll when I see Las Vegas in the logo instead of Oakland. I've been an A's fan for 35 years so I'd guess at least 35 more years for that! Let's...
Well it looks like they won't be the "Oakland" A's much longer. As long as they keep the Athletics name I will remain a fan...it hurts not having them near where I grew up anymore, but I haven't even lived in California since 2000 so it's not like much really changes if they are in a different...
Yeah nothing is really wrong with Onyx, it's just there's so much out there and I've got to draw the line somewhere if I don't want to go into debt.
One debut today plus a new pickup.
Mason Miller - Legit prospect pitched fewer than 30 innings in the minors before making his major league...
One more debut that I have on the way (Richard Lovelady). But I also got one in plus a surprise upgrade.
Chad Smith - There have been two Chad Smiths in MLB history, both righthanded relievers, and both have played for the A's. This Chad has a tougher autograph, the Albuquerque team set card...
1997 New Pinnacle seems like the top set for '90s Artist's Proofs, I still need the regular McGwire and Canseco cards after picking this one up. I believe I have all other '90s A's Artist's Proofs. Eckersley completes the 2023 Topps 1988 Autograph team set. I'm also one away from the Black...
Skylines was a series 2 insert and Rickey had a card in the base Pinnacle series 2 set, on the Padres. I agree in hindsight a Rickey A's Skylines card would have been awesome, the timing just didn't work out. If he was still on the A's there's a chance he could have made it into the set, I...
Three debuts since my last post, I already had one and have Tyler Wade and Chad Smith on the way.
Hogan Harris - Called up yesterday, made it into the game in relief, got a single out while allowing 1 hit, 1 hit by pitch, FIVE WALKS, and six runs, sent back to the minors today. Hopefully he...
2004 Donruss Season Stat Line Eric Byrnes 07/64...I still need 25-30 of the various Stat Line cards from 2001-2005 Donruss but I can seemingly only find 1 of them per year. Guess I will finish it up by the time I'm 75. 2022 Finest Blue Autograph Mark Mulder 087/150. And lastly a weirdly hard...
I'll have to keep my eye out to see if you are looking for anything I might have. Unfortunately I don't have any Finest Purple Vapor Refractors sitting around!
Maybe some people just have a mental block on seeing it? Or are determined to look for a color difference when it's really a difference in how light reflects off the surface?
Anyways I'll take any opportunity to show off my favorite team set:
Plus the first one I ever picked up, at the...
My first thought was, "Wow that Luis Rodriguez hasd a great signature!" That quickly turned into an extremely perplexed feeling over how on earth that signature is "Luis Rodriguez."
Been really busy lately so I haven't been able to do daily updates. They pile up!
There's no questioning that I'm all in on these 2023 Topps 1988 inserts...prior to this year I only owned 2 pack-inserted certified McGwire autographs, and the Gold 35/50 above is the second McGwire auto I've...
I don't have a problem with '93 Finest but there are some sets out there that can be tough to figure it out with. And with pretty much all sets I have to at least wiggle the card around a bit to catch the light right.
Regarding sellers misidentifying stuff like this, I think it falls into 2...
Yeah those Sweet Sigs Wall autos are not the greatest...most of them have a gray background so it's tough to see the signature. There are some with orange backgrounds that look good...for a signature on a bumpy piece of old wall. I only happen to have gray pieces; I still need to pick up a...
I've been down south in Auburn (home of a portion of COMC's operations!) for 15 years. My back fence is actually the King/Pierce County line. Originally from central California, which explains the A's and Trent Dilfer collections. My mom and sisters live in Tacoma...because my sisters have...
