If you want to dig through some of those lots, I made a (then current) list on page 7. I've been regularly looking at such lots as they get listed, and have never seen a Jonny Gomes card in any of them. He was in the 2006 and 2007 sets, but only 3 mini cards total have been listed of him...
Is that the 2006 mini? Maybe shoot the seller an offer, since it doesn't have any watchers. That said, the buybacks seem to get progressively rarer the earlier they are, so you might not get another chance anytime soon.
Wow, what an awesome piece!
Gotta admit though, my first reaction, based on opening this thread and immediately seeing the team signed WS ball, was "dear God, please don't let mouschi hack up such a cool baseball!"
It's hyperlinked in my post ("looked up"), but kinda subtle: http://pressbox.oaklandathletics.com/home%20directory/Game%20Center%20Archives/2013%20Archives/06%20June%202013%20Archives/06%20June%2001%20vs.%20Chicago%20%28AL%29/06-01-2013%20A's%20Expanded%20Game%20Notes.pdf
Edit: If it helps, I...
Thanks for the info Steve, that's pretty interesting. Did Topps mention these beforehand, or how did you know to be on the lookout?
Also, you only got one of those in your case. How many gum backs and B&Ws did you get?
Anyone have any of these? Brentandbecca had some of them up for sale, including a Gomes for a $30 BIN which I hit after sitting on for a day. Doing so may turn out to be one of the best card purchases I've made: this thing is practically impossible to distinguish from a regular base card, even...
It's cool, but, like you say, kinda arbitrary.
I Looked up the others for fun:
1 Lave Cross April 30, 1901
1,000 Mickey Cochrane May 15, 1927
2,000 Jimmie Foxx June 21, 1935
3,000 Sam Chapman Sept. 30, 1949
4,000 Hector Lopez Aug. 17, 1958...
If anyone's still looking for base buybacks, it's worth looking at brentandbecca's auctions at the moment---they have a bunch of large lots (sorted by year of buyback) which don't list players' names, and in some cases don't even show all the cards. They also have lots of mini buybacks, although...
I'd say there are three categories: cards that probably don't exist but are on checklists, cards that are probably still in unopened packs, and cards that are buried away in collections. The last category could be further broken down into cards that are locked down (i.e., permanent features of...
So if these cards are "clearly authentic," what does that say about Topps's other relics. Not clearly authentic? Clearly unauthentic?
MLB already does (or has done) this. See this authenticated piece of a base sold by The Highland Mint as an example.
Looking through all those lots, it appeared as though there were significantly more recent cards (2010 on, say) than earlier cards (e.g., 2006-2009). This might explain why I only saw one Matt Diaz card (2008 base--already have it) and zero Jonny Gomes cards (he was in the 2006 and 2007 sets)...

Part 1 of ended auctions containing buybacks that weren't named. Wow, there are a lot of auctions. This represents a review of 150 of the 323 ended auctions meeting the search criteria [Ginter (buyback, buy back, anniversary) (lot, set)]...
Just noticed that a bunch of sellers are listing lots of these cards without bothering to put the names of the players. If anyone else wants to dig through them, I've separated them out from all the lots that do list players...
Have both of the Jonny Gomes buybacks that have been listed. The mini cost way too much, but who knows if another will ever appear. Though if IUjapander is right about how Topps acquired the buybacks, you might expect there to have been more buybacks of non-stars than of stars. If a flat fee was...
