Funny how at least 3 Belle collectors on here need pattern #2 , including Donald Apland, who is only about 37 cards away from having all 8100 cards. Good luck guys.

Donald Apland is now down to needing 30 cards to complete his set of 8100! Anyone who has one of these cards, please e-mail Don at [email protected].

How long has he been chasing this set and how motivated is he to finish it? I got to imagine some of these have to be out there... like there is a member here who was trying to sell the complete Caminiti set of 90 cards.

Back in the day when I was down to my last 100 or so patterns out of the 8100, Larry Carpenter, @captainj, needed two cards to finish his set. One was a Manny Ramirez p. 66 card; I didn't have the other one he needed. No one was hoarding those same card#/same pattern# cards back then. I sent Larry the p. 66 card I had from my set. A week later, another Manny p. 66 card turned up. Larry picked up his last card a week or so later to finish the set, then another of that pattern also came in. He sent it to me, and over the next couple of months he found about another dozen of the cards I needed. I'm sure that when one p. 2 Belle card or p. 90 O'Neill card turns up, others will follow along quickly. They're out there.

If you assume 10 diffractor patterns were printed for each of the 8100 cards, that would be 230 patterns printed for each of the common cards if there was an even distribution of the 1998 Tek commons. Two assumptions here: the 10 diffractor patterns -- which is my best guess, and the even distribution of common patterns.

(10 diffractor patterns x 90 x 90 = 81,000 diffractors printed. 1 diffractor printed for every 23 commons (1 for every 6 packs). 81,000 x 23 = a print run 1,863,000 1998 Tek commons, divided by 8100 patterns = 230 cards for each common pattern).

I remember Don collecting Cubbies' 1998 Tek players back about when I started collecting toward the whole set of 8100 around 2001. We traded cards back then. My daughter and I had been trying to collect the old Red Sox players since 2000 and had amassed a bunch of extras of players from other teams. In 2001, we put 90 sets of 10 UltraPro nine-sleeve pages per player in fifteen 3-inch binders -- six players per binder, and started filling them up. At that time, we had more than half the set. We finished just before she started high school in 2004.

Not sure when Don shifted from just the Cubs' players to the whole set, but he's been at it a while. I would say he is quite motivated to finish it. He knocked off four cards he needed just in the past three weeks. I don't think his motivation includes buying $500.00 boxes or buying a set of 90 to get one card though! I still think this is a remarkable accomplishment as eBay has made it a lot harder to track down player collectors to initiate trades.

Don needs at least four cards that are either card #1 or same number/same pattern. Hopefully we can help him out. He's a good guy.

Thanks for the update Rich! I just bought the Thome pattern #83 from a COMC Ebay BIN. Might be a good place for Tek player or set collectors who don't usually check the COMC site, like myself.
