Mastro Pleads Guilty to Fraud

It's sad when a huge story like this, about the hobby's most famous and expensive card, gets few replies on this message board.
Yet, threads full of members XXXXXing about meaningless stuff goes on for hundreds of posts.
It's like how tabloid crap news gets better ratings than actual important news. I guess this board (and other boards) imitates real life.

I think it's a big deal. I guess it just depends on the irons you personally have in the fire. I told a few people I know and they didn't seem to care.

I think it is a big deal but it isn't really big need anymore. Anyone with half a clue knew the Wagner was trimmed long before the book came out. I personally am glad that people are being punished for their fraud.

People already knew Mastro plead guilty and admitting to trimming the Wagner?
Of course the hobby already knew about the trimming allegations and Mastro's shadyness. That's been known for 20 years.
But the fact that Mastro finally admitted to it after being a lying crook for so long is definitely news.

I agree with Chris. It's one of those things that has essentially been known for quite some time now. I guess his admitting it is a big deal, though nothing that crazy. I figure it's similar to guys like Rose taking forever to admit that he bet on baseball or ball players admitting to steroids when it's pretty obvious.

I'd be more interested in anything PSA/Joe Orlando has to say about it. They/he may have already addressed it but I haven't really dug around into it.

Austin, while I agree with you it is non-news news.

Now if Topps et al were admitting to some Game Used material shadiness it would have a bigger loader audience.

Yeah but how many of us 100% feel like any gu cards these days are legit? Same scenario.

If topps came out & admitted to having bogus autos on every bowman chrome card, that would send much much MUCH bigger shock waves through the hobby.

I mean, how many people actually own that wagner compared to how many own ANY bc auto?

Yes, that was my point. The GU collector base is much larger in population and age range, Card companies will take a beating once the full story comes out.

For instance, take the 2012 Prime Cuts Frisch Patch that just sold, DLP had never released an obvious patch but now Panini did. With the jumbo patch you can see that the item was from a 1955-1965 jacket. Frisch stopped coaching the Cards in 1938 and baseball all together in 1951. Either he was given the jacket during a stint in St Louis (55-65) or the jacket is from an un-named player. Frisch gamers garner HUGE money since so few are available, however, the un-named player jackets sell around $500. The card just sold ~$600

Got ya but I think we all still feel that way...you know, that the gu might not be real anymore. I don't think I'd be shocked at all. I do get what you mean by the quantity aspect though. There would be a slew of pissed of people.

Is the Playoff card supposed to be part of the bird? Although I only looked briefly, I cant find a match.

I looked up the same thing, its obvious that they are using what is left from DLP were they only released pieces of the Jacket and not the Patch parts. Im assuming Panini is just using the fact that DLP claimed it was authentic and dint do any work on its own.

This is probably the Jacket DLP bought and then Panini took over: Bought in 2003 in Hunt Auctions - I believe in 2004 DLP started to release these Jackets pieces so makes sense that it would be the jacket.

Description: Rare Frank Frisch St. Louis Cardinals warm up jacket c.1950's. Wool jacket with original embroidered Cardinal logo patch on breast worn by Hall of Famer Frank Frisch most as a coach for the Cardinals after his career. Rawlings tag with size 48 tag attched to inside lining, has blue elastic neck collar and sleeve cuffs along with navy blue leather pocket trim. Jacket is being consigned directly from the Frisch family who confirm that the jacket was given to Frisch directly by the Cardinals team. Very attractive item in superb condition from a legendary St. Louis HOF'er. Includes letter of provenance from Frisch family and LOA from David Bushing/Dan Knoll: EX-MT

Im not sure with Trimmed cards but with Older Game used with good enough searching you can usually find the item that was more than likely used for that card. Not all the time but most.
