I'd have to look back but I believe it was a broken pen. I don't know why I think that but the very first item some by the creator was a broken pen - believe it or not.

    Not off to google...

April 17, 1998. Back in the day when you could leave feedback for somebody without even having a transaction with them.

I started trading online in 1997 (AOL) and I remember the big thing before ebay was email auctions.

Email auctions? Like a replay all bid or something?

Also, AOL trading? Like in a chat group?

I'm not that young but don't remember either of these, so obviously missed them but sounds interesting back in the day.

1999 here and funny thing was I was on there and didn't think much of it. Then I realized cards were on there and it was downhill from there.

Don't use it as much any more as it's become just as easy for the buyer to run scams and get away with it as it was the seller.

The AOL trading was done on message boards which were somewhat similar to the message boards we're on right now (different folders for different topics, etc.) but pretty primitive by comparison. They were only accessible by AOL subscribers, which seems ridiculous now, but back in the late 90's most people who were online were dialing up through AOL. They also had chatrooms but I didn't frequent them much.

Email auctions were where somebody would maybe advertise on a message board that they were having a SUPER AWESOME LOW MINIMUM BID AUCTION and you would email him to receive the "catalog". The seller would email a list out to everybody that described each lot and gave a minimum bid. If you wanted to bid on something you'd send him an email telling him your bids for the lots you wanted. Then the next day the seller would mass-email an update to everybody that showed the high bidder for each lot, and you could see if you had the high bid. Yes this is the stone age compared to ebay.

The auctions would either end the normal way, where all lots ended at a certain time, or sometimes you would win if nobody outbid you after 3 days. Those auctions were kind of a pain for sellers to put together and reached a very limited number of people, so even though they were completely free to run they died out pretty quickly after ebay caught on.

I forgot all about paying with personal checks and money orders. Lots of good deals back then though.
