I posted this in the MT yesterday, I am hoping to get an answer. I'm scanning my O'neill collection and I'm at the '96 Fleer. Beckett lists two for O'neill, the 1996 Fleer base (gold lettering) and the shinny Tiffany card. I have a few of the regular card that are gold foil and matte finish. I also have the silver foil Tiffany parallel. Now the one in question is exactly like the base foil card with the only exception being this one has silver foil and the matte finish. (Not glossy). I seem to remember something about this back then but can anyone school me on this, thanks in advance. Kevin.

I think you just have a foil error card.

Besides the base fleer (gold), and tiffany (reflective silver), there were also team sets made for certain teams that used a flat silver foil. Team sets were 20 player sets packaged in team-only packs. They differ from the base cards with the silver foil and the card number, which on team set cards is XX of 20 on back.

The Yankees, however, did not have team set cards. My theory is that the foil was not changed from a team set run and your card is from a base set run that got stamped with the "wrong" foil. An interesting variation, but not a planned one.

Thanks Grace. I think I have to agree with you. It must be an error. I just double checked the card. It is number 192 so the team set theory is out too.

Not that I pay close attention to sellers listing on this card but I don't remember seeing a lot of these.

I'm sure someone on here knows more. I have no clue where they came from or how it was distributed...

Well, for kicks, I decided to look through all the 1996 Fleer cards listed on COMC.com. I found exactly one flat silver foil base card like the O'Neil (and bought it for 75 cents). I still think these are just sheets that were misstamped with silver foil instead of gold, then cut and put into packs like normal.

I'm more excited because I found a previously unknown-to-me cameo card of Mark Grace, and it's a pretty good one too.

There is also one "Missing Foil" 1996 Fleer card listed, good luck finding one of those!

I bought a hobby box of 1996 Fleer when the product was released and the entire box was full of these printing errors.

Grace, thanks so much for the effort. I'm happy about your cameo. That's always a bonus!

I know I cracked that stuff and I do remember something about the silver foil but with all that they make these days it is hard to keep up with year to year.

I found the box of 1996 Fleer. To clarify, the box was a 36 count retail box and not a hobby box as I originally thought.

All of the base cards were the printing variations (matte finish with silver foil lettering).

I'm wondering whether the fact that the cards were retail had anything to do with the printing variations.

Man, ya got me thinking here! Shouldn't there be a difference in Beckett or written somewhere? I seem to remember something about this but I don't know if I'm confusing it with Stadium Club. I think someone here would remember, no?

I just sifted through my older pics in Photobucket because I remember something about the gold and silver foil. It was the Stadium Club I had the pics of but I do remember with these Fleer as well. Here is the SC. If your able to see the gold and silver:

Decided to go through my 96 Fleer. If I remember correctly, I opened nothing but hobby and they are all matte finish gold foil. The Tiffany's are all glossy finish silver foil.

I just went to pull a card for Ruben Sierra to sign at the White Plains show and I see this in the Sierra section, one gold one silver:
