Easily one of the biggest and game-changing events to happen to the hobby in some time.

Upper Deck has launched their ePack program, allowing you to buy digital packs of cards and have the cards "shipped" to your COMC account to sell.

For right now, they are only offering this with 2015-16 UD Series 1 Hockey. They are offering some special ePack only inserts as well as chase cards to allow for you to combine 10 base or 5 Young Guns into a special, limited edition silver foil version of the card.

Unlike the Topps or Panini Digital apps, this app allows for you to collect digitally and then decide which cards you want to send to COMC to sell or send to you to keep.

To everyone who thought UD was dead or dying, they have just reinvented the hobby.

If you pull an insert, you can upload to COMC for sale but base cards just sit there I think unless you have ten to trade in for a parallel

It's a very interesting concept but since UD hasn't made baseball cards in 6 years (unless you count that terrible pictureless 2012 SP Signature set) it doesn't have any effect on what I collect. It would be interesting if Topps did this for inserted code cards (they did something similar a few years back but it was a little unwieldy), but as far as buying packs digitally...maybe I'm just an old man but I like physically ripping a pack open and thumbing through what's inside.

If by "game changing" you mean the furthering of steps already taken by others. And also if that change is the ONE change that no one actually wants and is the exact opposite of what the hobby actually is (or was if I'm just an old curmudgeon)

Are we just so conditioned now by redemptions that no one cares if they actually hold a card in their possession anymore? Is "collecting" completely dead to the point where it's just trading stock as foretold by the clairvoyants at thepit? God help us all

This is nothing more than testing the waters for a sham by Upper Deck to save money by cutting their printing/packaging not costs significantly. Maybe that's smart for them but it's against everything sports cards should be. Than again who can afford to buy packs of cards these days anyway. If they can make packs of 10 cards for less than a buck and shipping costs for only what you want to keep are actually reasonable (unlike the scam that became eTopps) then maybe there's hope but we know that will never happen

I don't think some people are grasping this.

Not everyone has the luxury of a LCS in their backyard.

You can physically get most cards shipped directly to you, so they can be in your possession or for you to rub on your body.

Unfortunately, this is the way the hobby is turning, instant gratification through digital means. Is it any different than joining a group break and watching some dude through your computer bust open packs for you?

I guess my feeling is opening packs is a very hands on experience with either instant gratification with a nice pull or instant disappointment when nothing good is in the pack. I want the pack in my hand to open and if I cant have that I wont be spending my money on their product. Have we gotten so connected to an "online life" that we now need to have tactile experiences like this online as well?

Just another step in each of us being removed from a real society only to be replaced by an online life.

Rub the cards on your body, that doesn't get said much ;)

Although I really don't care because I don't open new products , I do think there is a big segment of group breakers / Bunt / Digital card collectors out there who don't mind if the cards are opened through ePacks. Not sure how big it will get esp with it being UD/HKY but there is a hobby segment for it. It's basically the start of the card companies doing the group breaks themselves, which will be bad for breakers. Topps had group break redemptions and this is down that road IMO.

Collecting multiple copies of a card to "trade up" for a better card reminds me of 1991 & 1992 Wild Card, and that was a pretty exciting time. I had stacks and stacks of players just trying to upgrade!!
Personally, I'd be excited about a product like that. !)

While I agree, the "online" aspect is not really what "collecting" means to me, I could get used to it, just like I got used to video roulette in the casinos (man, I fought that for the longest time, but I love it so much now

you don't need a LCS - the internet provides plenty of opportunity to obtain PHYSICAL cards. Every pack and/or box shipped to you from the internet gives you EVERY card in PHYSICAL condition, not every pack from UD that only gives you the vast majority of cards that you can't put your hands on -- only very few cards will be physical.

UD epack plain sucks - it's hockey, the front images are soft and you can't read the stats on the back even zoomed in using their viewer. the only good part is that you get a free pack a day and that's all I'm doing with them - i'm not going to be spending money on packs or taking delivery of any physical cards that I may ever get.

as for instant gratification, I"m sitting on a ton of boxes so when the need to open packs (more than my normal two packs a day), I have boxes to go to. I don't need e-cards.

eTopps wasn't digital only. You could pay to have them sent to you. A PHYSICAL copy of a digital card. Plus, said card was limited to how many were purchased during the IPO. That program worked. This one, doubtful. Not a game changer by any means.

I mean, you can't get eTopps in packs of Topps. These are released in regular packs and digitally. Has a little more appeal to collectors.

Who the hell wants a picture of a card on a computer screen? If that's collecting, then I'm going to dig through everyone's buckets and amass a *****in' "collection" of my own.
