On the heels of completing my LA Dodger autograph project, news of a Brooklyn Dodger dying dropped today. There are just 25 players left alive who were Brooklyn Dodgers, having last played there in 1957, almost 60 years ago.

I don't know how I didn't know that he was related to Bobby Valentine.

Anyway, he's probably the greatest baseball trivia answer of all time.

Nice article. Branca was one of the Golden Era's greatest baseball ambassadors and one of the nicest guys you'd meet. Jackie Robinson's widow says she always appreciated the way Branca welcomed Robinson.

Branca was at Rangers games a lot when Valentine was manager in the mid '80s to early '90s and I met him twice at baseball card conventions in Dallas.

Valentine married Branca's daughter in 1977 and has been married ever since. He said Branca was the best father-in-law he could wish for.

Most pictures of Branca show him smiling. Even most of his baseball cards have a smile on his face.
