The Martian surface is home to both the largest known volcano, Olympus Mons, and largest known canyon, Valles Marineris, in the Solar System. With a height of 25 km and a base diameter of 600 km, Olympus Mons is three times the height of Mt. Everest, the tallest mountain on the Earth. Valles Marineris is 4,000 km long, 200 km wide, and almost 7 km deep. To put the shear magnitude of its size into perspective, Valles Marineris would stretch from the East to West coast of the United States.

Your Fact of the day for August 3rd...

Tony Thomas, of the Southern Maryland BlueCrabs, became the 1st player in baseball history to steal first base in a game against the Lancaster Barnstormers. The rule states ďAny pitch on any count not caught in flight will be considered a live ball, and a Batter may run to first base, similar to a dropped third strike.Ē So when Alejandro Chacinís 0-1 pitch went to the backstop, it became a live ball, giving Thomas the opportunity to dash to first. Per the official scoring sheet, Thomas actually wasnít even credited for a steal, since it was recorded as a fielders choice because of the ability for the catcher to make a throw.
