While I'm trying to not take on any card projects and save money for the National, I'm also starting to succumb to sneaker collecting and childhood/HS/college vintage stuff in general. I've always thought about it but I really didn't want another hobby or financial drain. However, I'm weak. That damn Slobby's World on Netflix got me. I found out the Nirvana t-shirt that for some reason I gave to Goodwill a few years ago is worth major $ (when I was moving to a new house, donated about 8 shirts out of the 500 I have). I found out the Siouxsie t-shirt I bought in college and have kept all these years is a Mosquitohead original and worth about $600. I bought a pair of vintage Blazers at a Goodwill a couple weeks ago (not real vintage, but reissues from 2011, AFAIK), mainly to have as daily wear, and have been stumbling into more GWs and thrift shops lately to pick shoes and t-shirts. I wanted the Air Max Susans that "dropped" (lord help me using that word) but got shut out, or "took the L." But this past Saturday I managed to snag a pair of SB Dunk High Walk The Dogs (I know, they are not for everybody).

This is a long way of asking if anyone else has this sickness, and where the best places are to learn about it. I'm on a Discord but it seems like trying to learn French by reading a French novel. I've already decided I'm not going to get into bots and "cooking" and major flipping and all that, which seems to me to be unfun and detrimental to the hobby, not to mention my ability to acquire shoes I want at SRP. Although it may be a matter of can't-beat-em-join-em.

Will be happy to delete this thread or have it moved to a more appropriate place, but just wanted to have a few pointers.

I’ll admit it, I binge-watched every episode of slobbys world. Luckily I haven’t ventured into the realm of expensive sneakers, because I have way too many other collections I indulge in. However, I have been drawn to StockX and just yesterday picked up recent releases of air max 95s (which I blame on slobbys world) and Jordan’s.

I take everything on that show with a grain of salt. Sure, they walk into a Goodwill and buy $1500 worth of stuff for $19, mint condition 30-year-old concert tees and sneakers and bootleg Gucci stuff. I totally believe that, happens every time I go, too. But the characters on the show are amusing. My favorites were the guys who were specialists in cleaning old baseball caps. They come in, pour water into a plastic tub, and soak the dirty old caps in it. The big reveal, though, is when they use, get this, SOAP! I was especially impressed to learn that they don't rinse the caps in clean water. Instead, the important trade secret is to scrub, with a brush, the white hats with the same water you just clouded with dirt from the soak. I'm a total newb at cleaning clothes, I guess. After that I connected my washing machine's drain hose to the input connection. Not only is it apparently the key to getting my laundry Irish Spring clean, it is also most economical. Then, you use custom-crafted cardboard forms to hold the hats in a particular shape. I wonder if the fancy haberdashery and cowboy hat stores have caught onto that tech yet. They are probably still using steam and wooden blocks to mold and shape hats.

But I digress. Growing up in the 80s, we did have tons of cool stuff, and it's fun to see all that stuff I banished into archival storage in my brain again. Like if I hadn't been collecting cards for the last 28 years and suddenly discovered them all again. What's old is cool, what's new is cool, everything is awesome. In high school there was that one kid who wore a different bootleg Gucci t-shirt every day, probably was a kid like that in every school. And I definitely had my favorite band shirts that I wish I still had (the 3/4 sleeve ones, black body with white sleeves, NOT white body with black sleeves), and they don't make sneakers like my favorite pairs. They still make Chucks, but they're $65+ instead of $19.99. Definitely paying for the cool these days.

Speaking of growing up in the 80’s, my newest renewed addiction is the cassette tape. Just got my third Nakamichi deck in earlier this year. I thought it was impossible to shock my wife with my collection purchases, but when she found out how much a refurbished RX-505 goes for these days she about fell over...IMG_8921.JPG
