Highly Innovative Managerial Move by Lou Piniella

What exactly happened and does anyone know the rule of what Sean Marshall just did?

Did used to happen more often when teams didnt have so many pitchers used each game. Worked for Lou so far, though LaRussa did play the game well by making sure that Marshall HAD to pitch to the righty...unfortunately the righty was the awesomeness that is Hoffpauir

Yeah. we caught a break with some bad umpire calls, maybe we can cash in now in the bottom of the 9th. But a cool move by Piniella for us younger fans who haven't seen that before.

What's the point of the thread without explaining what he did? What happened?

He had Marshall start the inning pitching, and then brought in another pitcher for the matchup after the first out. But he kept Marshall in the game as a position player in LF. Then after that matchup, he brought Marshall back in to pitch again.

Reminds me of something I saw on a website a few days ago theorizing about platooning starting pitchers. While it would never happen, wouldn't it be fun to see two pitchers who could hit go back and forth throughout a game.

That's awesome! It should be done more often, if you want a lefty specialist to get one out then leave.

Exactly, except in this case Marshall is the lefty specialist lol.

Lol, it's great if it's a lefty then righty then lefty. Or, if it's switch hitter, do a Pat Venditte with two separate pitchers.
