Since you guys are so full of information, heres a personal favorite set from my collection. A couple of questions arise...

1. Why all the diff versions?
2. Whats the story behind the Challenge cards?
3. Why have 2 different card numbers when they look exactly alike?

Donruss went a little crazy as did other card manufacturers. You think that's bad, just wait until you get close to finishing off any type of run like this and then you can't find the last few cards because half of them aren't listed right and the other half you miss all on your own. It gets pretty insane.

Not sure what the deal is with your Bagwell cards looking the same? Maybe they thought they had two portraits and found out later they only had one? Either way, my Andruw's have 2 different portraits. As for all of the different types of each, who knows, it was a crazy time in the card business. 2005 may have been the craziest year in cards. There were so many sets out that year, it was crazy! As for the challenge set, I have never heard where those came from or how they were distributed.

The challenge cards were some sort of exchange set.. You had to mail in
a set of cards and the embossed the word challenge on them and maied
them back? Or something close to that?

I remember seeing this game at Target and reading the list of players on the back of the box. Dang, there was Baggy. Aw crap, am I gonna have to pay 18 bucks for this game to get his card?

Nope. Thanks ebay! :D

I knew this thread existed but couldn't find it! I guess I didn't dig deep enough. Anyways, a few recent pick-ups for my PC.

2002EliteNational.jpg
2002 Donruss Elite Status Chicago National, #4/5. Neat card, has a little blank matte area where the Elite Status serial numbering would usually be near the upper right corner. Embossed National logo on the front, stamped number 4/5 on the back.

2002StudioAllStar.jpg
2002 Studio All-Star Fanfest. Didn't even know they existed until I saw this on eBay. Checked Beckett.com and they just were added to the listings in the spring.

2002LeafSOMB.jpg
2002 Leaf Shirt Off My Back. From a recent FCB group sub. I haven't seen many patch versions of this card, and I can't really identify where on the jersey this patch would have come from (looks like the top of an "S" but it's too small to be from the "Mariners" name on the jersey chest), so I submitted mainly for authentication. I was very pleasantly surprised by the grade!

Donruss thought that having a 1/1 per 12 box case drove sales, and also low numbered parallels

2. Whats the story behind the Challenge cards?
Something like 240 sets made for a contest - think you had to complete a full base set.

3. Why have 2 different card numbers when they look exactly alike?
Are they DK and DK Update? Really doesn't matter though, that's just dumb.

And to think, 2005 was much less complicated than 2004.

I've started to take a liking to stamped show cards, as long as the seller doesn't try to pass them off as super-premium cards at super-premium prices. I've been picking up a few Oleruds for my PC for a few bucks apiece. My latest one:

Thats cool. Ive recently gotten these and I thought I was getting regular ones. They are just embossed, no foil stamping like yours...
