Back when I really got into cards in 1980-81, I remember there was a brief craze for these cards. I guess when you only had 3 sets a year to build, you had to get excited about something. I seem to recall an article in one of the early Baseball Cards magazines, I think they called them 'phantoms' in the article, that listed a bunch of phantoms of then-recent vintage. IIRC, 1981 or 1982 Fleer had a bunch. Pete Rose I remember was a big chase because he was in the background on several guys, playing 1B for the Phillies, and he was just about the biggest star in the game at that time. I might still have that magazine, I'll check this week.

You got me curious about 1982 Fleer , so I did a COMC search. This one seems to be Carlton Fisk even though the last year he played for the Sox was 1980. No one wore #27 for the Red Sox in 1981 and in 1982 Mike Brown wore #27 but he was a pitcher. So it has to be him, right?

From my Jay Canizaro collection, these look like they include Terrance Long, and the cards are from 3 different companies as well.

Is that the entire Jay Canizaro collection? I wonder if freelancers sell their pics to different companies?

You know you've been collecting a player too long when you can identify him by his elbow and his package.

The 1999 SP Lankford just mentions McGwire's name. So far I've just been doing pics. Name dropping is a whole different ball of wax that I'm not ready to tackle. Do these have pics?

Speaking of names mentioned on cards, I just noticed that Topps listed corresponding players and card numbers of past sets on the back of the 2011 cards. I went through all Ryno's previous card numbers and found one:

That also means there are a lot of parallels to fetch.

He's in the on-deck circle of the Lankford (see below) so it's not just by name. I haven't gotten into cards mentioning him by name yet. If I start that, I will be opening the can of checklist hell spanning over 30 years of checklists and checklist variations to locate.

I don't have a Spectrum yet of Edmonds and apparently neither does any site I looked through. I just cut and copied these pics from checkoutmycards. These cards are in my "need to scan" pile which is over 1k cards deep so it will be awhile until I can get you better pictures.

That brings up a good point...use batting orders for the year previous to the date of the card and you'll likely catch some cameos of your player in the batter's box on cards featuring the hitter ahead of him in the lineup.
