Hey fellas,

I've been working on the Frank Thomas run in this set for years and years. I almost have half of them (39/90). Here's what I still need. Any help is greatly appreciated. If you have any of these, please PM me. These are just the base needs but of course I'm also interested in any diffractors as my progress with those is slim (6/90). Thanks!

1998 Topps Tek #6 Frank Thomas

Patterns still needed:
1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 11, 12, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 20, 25, 27, 29, 33, 35, 37, 39, 40, 44, 46, 48, 51, 52, 53, 54, 56, 58, 60, 61, 63, 64, 65, 68, 72, 74, 75, 76, 78, 79, 80, 81, 83, 84, 85, 86, 87, 89, 90

I believe I may have pattern 58 of Thomas' that you need. PM me as a reminder and Ill double check for you.

not sure about the winner , but i am fairly certain the runner-up was my partner...he'd been talking all week about getting that box for $200...kept telling him it would be a steal if it went under $275 and that i expected it to be in the 300-325 range....guess the next one will hit 380-400....

What on earth could these recent TEK unopened box buyers think they could find in a box of 1998 TEK that could even pay for a third of $300 for a box?

my guess....a 4-diffractor box including a jeter , a ripken , and either a bagwell , thomas , thome , or griffey along with a few base card patterns that at least 2 player collectors still need such as this bagwell that sold last week :

Wow! $370 shipped. I think 2014 Tek is helping rekindle interest in 1998 Tek. In addition to that Bagwell base that went for $35 a Bagwell diffractor went for $70. Crazy stuff.::facepalm::

apparently....

i'd actually asked about 2 weeks ago if the "old school tekkies" expected the 2014 product to help or hinder the original version ...specifially , i wondered whther they felt it would introduce it to a whole new audience which could lead to a huge surge in prices as even more people are fighting to find the same items or if they felt the new product would "demystify" the old product making it seem less rare/special and thus lowering interest....the people who actually responded to me pretty much agreed - they felt it would be a boost and based on recent sales it seems to be a HUGE boost....i'm not complaining...i have no NEW tek and less than 20 cards from all 3 older years combined....but i do see the potential for even more growth - enoughto make it appeal to not only collectors but investors as well - at least for a while....hey - i'm a set-building , parallel-loving fanatic and i'm only JUST NOW beginning to get on the tek train and i'm sure i won't be the last one either....

1998 TEK

No way this is a real sale.

I think someone is playing games on ebay with the 98 TEKs.

I havent seen any pickup in interest in 98 TEK with the release of 2014 TEks. I just put 1400 of them back in storage.
I did check yesterday at a Barnes and Noble and see the 98 TEK 90 mixed card sets are now priced at $ 120 each from Big Monthly Beckett but it
may have changed from $100 for a 90 card set a while ago as I don't buy the Price guides much anymore.

So much of the activity regarding 2014 Topps TEK appears to me to be pump and dump tactics/antics by some sellers. I don't buy into that.
I have been able to buy about 5 or 6 numbered to 75 2014 TEKS just to see what they look like for a buck each with free shipping.

Some of the card patterns of 2014 do look cool but prices of the 2014 will come down dramatically in a month or two just like the 1998 TEKs did initially before lack of availability caught up six or seven years later and prices started to climb as collectors took a liking to the set .

Last '98 Tek box I opened I pulled a Juan Gonzalez diffractor, my 32nd Juan Gone diffractor. Earlier this year, after trying to trade them for about a year, I sold my three duplicate Juan Gone diffractors for $450.00 to one of the honchos on the Juan Gonzalez board. Talk about fanatic collectors.... There is real value to many of these cards way, way beyond the quoted Beckett BV.

Way to go, Rich! Super impressive on the Juan Gone diffractor sales. Thanks also for giving a price point of what Juans sell for. I had an idea for most of the big players but I hadn't actually seen a Juan sell before. Didn't realize they could fetch that high!

I recently bought a lot of 1998 Topps Tek singles in an effort to get the lone Sandy Alomar Jr. Unfortunately none of them were diffractors. The rest of them are up for trade or sale for Alomar patterns I need, though I would consider other Alomar cards I need. This is what I have:

12 - Craig Biggio pattern 35
24 - Todd Walker pattern 67
25 - Tino Martinez pattern 14
38 - Vinny Castilla pattern 36
42 - Derek Bell pattern 81
52 - Jason Kendall pattern 50, 76
57 - Barry Larkin pattern 22
58 - Tony Clark pattern 81
62 - Jose Cruz Jr. pattern 28
70 - Chuck Knoblauch pattern 47, 53
75 - Brian Jordan pattern 66
78 - Mark Grace pattern 31
79 - Jeff King pattern 67
90 - Brian Jordan pattern 16

The Alomar patterns I need are:
6, 8, 10, 11, 13, 14, 15, 20, 21, 27, 34, 40, 51, 54, 55, 66, 70, 71, 78, 83, 84, 86, 87, 88

What I'm seeing though is a lot of '98 Tek cards hitting eBay and them all be priced at like $8.99 BIN plus s/h. Basically someone buying a box for $300 has to do this. Hopes someone like me pulls the trigger on one of the patterns I need and if they have enough of those type of situations, then they start to make their money back.

At the end of the day the only way they make their money back is to hit a few big name diffractors but even then they have to hope said player collector doesn't have that pattern.

slightly better strategy (IMO) :

a box of 80 cards .....at 1 in 6 , odds are you get 3 or 4 diffractors...let's say you get the basic 3 so you have 77 base cards....jeter and ripken seem to sell well anywhere from 5 to 13 dlvd....quite a few others seem to sell consistently for 3-5....personally i would list the lesser names in an auction format...either 2.99 or 3.99 opening bid with a BIN in the 5.99 to 7.99 range ....someone wants to grab one quickly , it sells at a price that the seller likes....if somene bids on it , killing the BIN , he has a solid minimum while it still has a chance to go crazy like the recent bagwell ....the key as a seller would be patience....no need to list them all at .99 opening bid and let most sell for that immediately....now i'm defintely NOT advocating the practices of griffeyfan24 (who seems to think everything should be priced high enough that an 80% markdown still leaves it at 20 times BV) , but something a bit more reasonable that would still allow a small profit....

totally agree with this which is why i'm not even considering chasing the new material yet , but unless someone out there is sitting on mountains of 1998 , i don't see it going down anytime soon..quite the opposite in fact...i think 2014 tek will drive more people to a product they'd never thought about before....if that does happen , i think demand will continue to increase while supply remains constant , giving singles (both base and diffractor) noticeable price movement....

Still tough to get to $300 or more per box to be honest. I mean I don't know when it started but people feel like every freaking card in the set is a $5 card or better. I mean there is a reason you see the same card over and over again. I've said this before... there is a limited demand market out there... Once I have all the Belle base, I will not be going after any of them ever again... so the lucky person who has the three patterns I do can capitalize on it now but once I have them, I am out of the market. Same goes for this crazy nutty juan gon guy... he might pay $150 a diffractor but he isn't paying that for a pattern he has... therefore the second one of that pattern might be a $10 card lol... it is that simple.
