This month’s update contains the introduction to the eagerly anticipated 2014 Bowman, which has come out of the gate scorching hot, thanks to a solid checklist and a certain 2013 first rounder’s autograph – which so happens to be short printed. By this time next month we will see which other names from this product have risen in popularity and price. Meanwhile, media hype and prospect call-ups have led to more increases in secondary market value over the past few weeks.
1) Kris Bryant, Cubs (Best Card: 2014 Bowman Autograph) – Before 2014 Bowman came out, all prospectors were speculating they would come out hot, but thanks to a great first few weeks in AA and the fact they are short printed made them hotter than molten lava. So much so that no one seems to care they are redemptions. Prices have risen in the first couple of weeks of release from the $250-300 range to over $400 each.
2) Joey Gallo, Rangers (Best Card: 2012 Bowman Draft Autograph) – Thanks to plus-plus-plus power and improved plate discipline, prospectors are seeing dollar signs in their eyes, as he makes his second straight appearance here. As this goes to print, he is tied for the minor league homerun lead with 14. His cards have gone from the $40 range to over $60 each.
3) J.P. Crawford, Phillies (Best Card: 2013 Bowman Draft Autograph) – It’s not hard to shine like a diamond in a system so utterly devoid of true 5-tool prospects, but Crawford’s future may be even brighter. The experts call him the best overall shortstop in last year’s draft, and his bat has been just as impressive this season. While he’s several years from seeing Philly for himself, his card values won’t wait, as they’ve gone from the $10-15 range to $25 per.
4) Brandon Nimmo, Mets (Best Card: 2011 Bowman Draft Autograph) – Free of injury and the hitter’s toughest park in low Class-A Savannah, Nimmo has been looking great in the Florida State league thus far. It’s also always a good sign when a hitter walks more than he strikes out. His cards have risen from the $10-12 range to $20 each.
5) Rougned Odor, Rangers (Best Card: 2012 Bowman Chrome Autograph) – As Rangers fans await the return of Jurickson Profar, their system’s top prospect received a bump from AA recently. What you’re smelling isn’t just his surname, it’s his card values, which have also received a bump, from the $15 range to $25 each.
6) Rafael Montero, Mets (Best Card: 2013 Bowman Chrome Autograph) – Second only to Noah Syndergaard within their system of talented young arms, he just received his first call up to CitiField and his cards responded in kind, from the $10 range to $20-25 each.
