I'll try a C team, reserves in parenthesis:

C: Roy Campanella (Mickey Cochrane)
1B: Rod Carew (Orlando Cepeda/Will Clark...mix and match any of these 3)
2B: Eddie Collins (Robinson Cano)
SS: Joe Cronin (Dave Conception)
3B: Miguel Cabrera (Jimmy Collins)
LF: Joe Carter (Carl Crawford)
CF: Ty Cobb (Ben Chapman)
RF: Sam Crawford (Roberto Clemente)
SP: Roger Clemens (Steve Carlton)
RP: Francisco Cordero (Aroldis Chapman...Cordero has the longer track record)

Manager: Bobby Cox

Did I miss anyone?

EDIT: I only put players at the position they played the majority of their games at.

I'll use the same letter of my last name, K:

C- King Kelley
1B- Harmon Killebrew
2B- Jeff Kent
3B- George Kell
SS- Don Kessinger (SS was pretty light in the K's)
OF- Ralph Kiner
OF- Al Kaline
OF- Willie Keeler
SP- Sandy Koufax
SP- Jim Kaat
SP- Clayton Kershaw (Had to get him on the list)
RP- Craig Kimbrel

Lot's of power, lot's of speed. Don't know about the defense, but my top 3 SP is solid as hell and I have a dominant closer.

SP Bert "Be Home" Blyleven
C Bench with Yogi Berra getting some games
1B Bagwell
2B Biggio
3B Boggs Brett
SS Banks
LF Bonds
CF Lou Brock or Cool Papa Bell
RF Braun
RP Mordecai Brown

Mangaer and occasional SS Lou Boudreau

Great thread!

J

MGR: Davey Johnson
RHP: Walter Johnson
LHP: Randy Johnson
CL: Todd Jones
C: Charles Johnson
1B: Wally Joyner
2B: Kelly Johnson
3B: Chipper Jones
SS: Hugh Jennings
LF: Geoff Jenkins
CF: Andruw Jones
RF: Reggie Jackson

My starting pitching is as dominant as it gets, and while my lineup has some pop (Jones, Jackson), the rest seem to to define the "R" in "WAR".

Here's an idea for a fun project to find out for sure which letter would field the most dominant team/manager.

Go through each position and rank them according to hits, wins, home runs, saves, whatever.

Find the highest ranking player for each letter and assign them a score based on their rank.

For example, here's how the top 1,000 saves leaders would stack up:

R 1
H 2
S 3
F 4
W 5
E 6
P 8
M 9
N 11
C 13
J 16
A 17
G 20
I 24
B 26
V 29
Q 33
L 34
U 35
O 40
T 44
K 68
D 95
Y 306
Z 363

What, no Paul Waner in RF??? Terrible omission, Jay! Final grade: D- :p

EDIT: I'd also put Billy Wagner in at RP, too.

Haha, I know. That was a tough choice. I went with the "he was one of my favorites growing up" choice....and some more power. Williams and Winfield back-to-back would be pretty intimidating.

But Cabrera over Collins? Please relinquish any and all Red Sox items now. :)

Haha! I had Collins as my starter but I figured I would take a lot of flak for not having Cabrera there instead. I shouldn't have tried to please the masses. =P

This is one of the best arguments I have seen in favor of WAR or JAWS. In no way will this determine anything. Is Billy Koch more dominant than Craig Kimbrel because he has more career saves? Does their standing on the all times saves list make Roberto Hernandez, Todd Jones and Jose Mesa three of the most dominant closers ever? Ugueth Urbina might be the best closer with a U not named Koji Uehara, and Valverde the best with a V, but your system has those letters assigned a 29 and 35 because of them, so they're twice as dominant as K at 68 with Billy Koch, and that's only because Billy Koch has more saves than Kimbrel that we use Koch? Was Trevor Hoffman more dominant than Mo up until the day that Mo passed him on the saves list? One stat category does not determine a better player.

I couldn't agree with you more.

Keep in mind that this is purely a fantasy lineup, and has absolutely nothing to do with advanced metrics, head-to-head comparisons, etc.... It's not even a debate of who the best players are at each position!

I could run a separate list using WAR,JAWS,PECOTA,ZIPS,K/9IP,Blown Saves, etc..., and it would still be nothing more than a fun exercise in determining the general "strength" of a surname's prefix.

LSP Andy Pettitte
RSP Jim Palmer over Gaylord Perry
C Mike Piazza
1B Albert Pujols
2B Dustin Pedroia
3B Terry Pendleton? Pujols does have over 100 games played here. Palmeiro at 1B?
SS Rico Petrocelli and Dustin Pedroia as a Double Play combo. Can't beat that.
LF Lou Pinella as our player/manager? Vada Pinson played CF but could handle the job.
CF Kirby Puckett
RF Dave Parker
RP Jonathan Papelbon

I think the letter R could be very good. Though it seems to be lacking at 1B.

OF - Ruth, Frank Robinson, Jim Rice
1B - Bob Robertson (?!?), There's got to be somebody better than that. Heck, how about Anthony Rizzo)
2B - Jackie Robinson
3B - Brooks Robinson
SS - Ripken
C - Ivan Rodriguez
P - Ryan

Pete Rose?

Can't believe I overlooked Rose. Either at OF or 1B with Frank Robinson at the other.
