Today I received an email from ebay giving me $10 to list an auction, and then another $10 if the item sells. The offer seems to be geared at getting ebay'ers who've ever sold something to list stuff again.

Wow I thought the bid on five things and get $5 was an easy one. Just list a base card for $1000 and you get $10.

Or work with a board member. Tell them you are listing a card right now for $.99 BIN with free shipping. Member buys the card, you mark it as shipped, member marks as received you get $19, and the member gets his $1 back.

Same here. I just listed a few things yesterday but I see you have to 'activate' the offer.

I wonder if this could be a scam. The recent ebay hack has me paranoid. When you click on the "Activate Now" link in the email you're taken to an ebay login screen that looks okay. The URL starts with "https" so it should be legit, right?

It's also on the eBay promotions page and can be activated there rather than via the link in the email.

Just for peace of mind I forwarded it to [email protected] since it doesn't appear in the messages tab. I received a reply stating it is from eBay and genuine.

Just used my $20 ebay apology coupon. This thing has been listed [too high] at $199 for the longest time. I've actually been tempted a few times to hit the BIN a few times. (It's worth it to overpay because I wasnt sure when the next time this card would pop up.) When I saw I had a $20 coupon, I figured it would take some of the sting out, so I decided to buy it today. When I got there, I saw the seller dropped the price. With the coupon, I spent (about) what it would go for in auction.

Just saw this post and wanted to clarify a couple things. A URL starting with "https" simply means that the site is serving pages "securely" so that they cannot be intercepted (and read in a useful way) by anyone between you and the website. This means nothing when figuring out if a link is legit, though. Look at the URL, especially the first 3 elements. They should be "[something].ebay.com" immediately after the http:// or https://. Anything else, and you aren't going to ebay.com. Then there might be a million other characters after that, but clicking that link sends all that info to your ISP where it's broken down and routed according to the site requested. From the $20 coupon email, the link on the button that says,"Shop Now" is:
http://rover.ebay.com/rover/4/0/8?e...ams=i&sojTags=emid=bu,segname=segname,crd=crd

The parts after "rover.ebay.com" might be different for everyone because they'd surely use this info to identify the individual ebayers clicking the link. But knowing at least the basic info can save you a world of trouble. If you get an email and it has a link to something like http://asdf.smedgehaned.ru[stuff following], it's probably not legit. Sometimes scammers might create a link to
http://asdf.smedgehaned.ru/?aueacoinocea=rover.ebay.com&avoeacna/&abuecb=4w94c4[tons more stuff]
And you see the ebay.com in there and think it's OK. But you always go by the leftmost elements in the string to determine what the actual website you're going to is.

Re: olerud363's comment, I don't see an "activate now" link in the email I got, and the link does not have https on it. Maybe you got something else?
