Wow. Did not see that coming. Takes a special man to see the bigger picture and go out without embarrassing yourself. Take some time off and he shouldn't have any shortage of job offers when he's ready to get out of the house. That playoff no hitter was one of those moments you don't forget as a sports fan

WOW!!! That's big news......sad that his career is over (as Steve indicated). He had a great run from 2002-2011 (plus/minus a year or two). Too bad he never won a championship.

Dominant for a good chunk of time, insane/memorable performances, the hardware. Love it when someone doesn't play out the string for the money.

Wow, this comes as a complete shocker to me! He's had his struggles recently but didn't think he would hang it up yet. A dominant pitcher in his prime.

His arm was completely dead, pretty sure his velocity was down in the low 80's

Ah, Roy Halladay. One of the best pitchers I have had to pleasure to watch. Class act all the way, and I give him a ton of respect for signing the one-day contract so he can retire a Blue Jay.
He is one player we don't need to make a HOF thread for. We all know the answer. I'd be surprised if anyone has a legit argument against his election.

He should be the next player inducted into the Blue Jays' Level of Excellence. He and Carlos Delgado were the best players the Jays have had since the early 90's.

You can't appreciate a player like Roy unless he plays for your team, which he did. I won't miss a player like i will Roy since Cal retired.
Just my 2 cents, but i think it's a shoulder issue instead of arm...maybe rotater cuff.

Wow. That's a terrible argument. So had Roy pitched a few more injury plagued/sub-par seasons then he would be a HOFer? ~Makes sense.~

Ah, but this gets to my point about the worthiness thread. He was Koufax-esque in how brightly he burned for a (relatively) short time period. HOF should be about peak more than longevity, although there's clearly arguments for both.
EDIT: Regarding Pedro Martinez, he had a 7-9 year stretch of pure and utter dominance, but otherwise should have ended his career 4 years earlier. His peak, though more even impressive, was a year or three shorter than Halladay's, though no one will question Pedro as first ballot. And both pitched the bulk of their peaks in the AL East!

I think it comes down this: Roy, for a good 10 years was one of the best, certainly most durable, pitchers in baseball to go along with all his accolades and accomplishments, while Dwight, was the best in the game for a good 3-4 year run, was pretty good for 2-3 years, then pissed his career away. Halladay's career was cut short due to injury, Dwight's was cut short cause he couldn't lay off the blow.
If Halladay doesn't get in first ballot, he'll get in 2nd for sure.
